Schools for the Gifted
The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. For a private school perspective, read

Considering Independent Boarding Schools as an Educational Alternative
by Patsy Kumekwa, Scholar Search Associates, Clinton, Connecticut
Independent residential secondary schools can be viable educational options, but they are by no means equal, especially with respect to genuinely gifted students. This point was brought home to me during a recent conversation I had with an acquaintance. As parents of children (mine a second grader, hers in college) identified as gifted, we were sharing ideas about educational approaches which both recognize and support those with notable intellectual potential. We began to discuss the relative merits of some well-known boarding schools in New England.
Some years ago, my acquaintance had explored independent schools for her son who was on his way to exhausting the math and science courses in the local high school. Under consideration at the time was a highly respected and nationally known boarding school. But when asked about her impressions of this school, the parent said, "They just didn't have the right answers."
"They just didn't have the right answers" captured for me the distinction between independent schools that compel closer examination and those that probably would fall short in meeting the needs of gifted students. What are these "right answers"? There are a lot of independent schools that possess impressive educational attributes (accelerated/AP courses, small classes, comprehensive art, athletic, and computer facilities, multicultural diverse student population, and so on). Indeed, many schools have the look and feel of small liberal arts colleges. But beyond academic rigor and extensive and well-maintained buildings and grounds, can or do these institutions truly serve those with academic and creative talent?

PAGE 3 OF 4 A friend of her father introduced her to Foxcroft which, she says, is a great environment due to its varied curriculum, horseback riding and the fact that "it's very safe." She also found "very nice people", a welcome change from the anti-Asian bias she encoutered in Switzerland.
Tomimatsu says the hardest things about adapting to Foxcroft are learning to speak English and dealing with homesickness. If she has a problem, she seeks out her friends or her American chemistry teacher who serves as her advisor. When things get really tough, she concentrates on her purpose for being there: speaking English and soaking up American culture. Though she insists on speaking English, she usually mingles with foreign students because they share the same experiences of being overseas. Her closest friends are from Japan, Taiwan and Corea. Life without other Asian students, she says, "would be very, very hard for me." For Tomimatsu it is frustratingly difficult to get involved with American students because she doesn't speak English "100%". "Orientals can laugh at my jokes," and are interested in what she has to say. She finds intramural sports to be the most helpful ice-breaker into the American way of life, and gleefully describes her winning debut performance in field hockey.

The Hyde School Program
For Character-Based Education and Parenting
By: Laura and Malcolm Gauld
New York: Scribner: 2002 Reviewed by: Lon Woodbury Founded in 1966 by Malcolm’s father Joseph Gauld, the Hyde School in Bath, Maine provided the kind of education he though students really needed. He was concerned the mainstream schools focus was almost exclusively on aptitude, while almost completely ignoring attitude. To be effective, Gauld felt a school needed to work with both aspects, and felt part of the growing problems with America’s young people revolved around the imbalance created when schools did not take a student’s attitude seriously. Over the years, he developed what is referred to as the Hyde School education, which combines College-prep academics with character education.
