Working for Freedom Kevin J. Rowland
Libertarian 2nd District of TN Do we want a country in which individuals are proud of themselves confident they can handle their own problems? Or do we want a country in which everyone is responsible for everyone else, but no one is responsible for himself? Do we want a country where groups dislike each other because each gains only at the expense of the others, and where we are dependent upon the favors of politicians to survive? Do we want a society in which the government takes half our income from us and then gives part of it back to us as though we were children on an allowance? We are no longer proud, self-reliant Americans. Government has turned too many of us into whiners, dependents, and people asking for favors. We need to start changing this now. We can not trust the career politicians to give up their perks and powers and allow people the freedom to control their own lives. The Republicans have become the party of big government, and the Democrats are the party of bigger government. Only the Libertarian Party believes in a Constitutionally limited federal government and more personal freedom on a consistent basis.

Congress poised to put safeguards on Mexican trucks
Trucks entering the United States from Mexico will have to meet stricter safety standards if the bill becomes law. By Kate Snow CNN Congressional Correspondent WASHINGTON (CNN) In a sign that security concerns trump politics in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Congress is poised to pass a once-controversial bill placing safeguards on Mexican trucks entering the United States and President Bush intends to sign it. The House passed the measure as part of a transportation spending bill Friday by an overwhelming 371-11 vote. The bill now goes to the Senate. The bill would allow Mexican trucks to go beyond an existing 20-mile commercial zone at the U.S. border only after a comprehensive safety review by the Department of Transportation. Did you know?

Campaigns are aggressively - and creatively - using their Web sites and the capabilities of the Internet, and as the election season heats up, we expect to see even more interesting things to come. Given the creative ideas swirling around the Internet on this topic, Congress Online thought there might be some ideas that congressional offices could adapt for their use (within the guidelines of the House and Senate rules, of course). This issue of Congress Online explores some of the innovative things campaigns are doing and provides some insight into how Members of Congress can use some of the practices effectively in their official duties.
