Congress vows unity, reprisals for attacks
Members of Congress gathered on the steps of the Capitol to show the nation their unity and sang "God Bless America" WASHINGTON (CNN) Members of Congress promised to "stand together" and vowed revenge in the aftermath of terror attacks Tuesday that killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, in Washington and New York. Tuesday evening, lawmakers gathered on the steps of the Capitol for a symbolic display of unity and an apparently spontaneous chorus of "God Bless America." "Senators and House members, Democrats and Republicans will stand shoulder-to-shoulder to fight this evil that has perpetrated on this nation," said House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois. "We will stand together to make sure that those who have brought forth this evil deed will pay the price." Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, assailed the "despicable acts" and declared that Congress would convene Wednesday. CNN.COM SPECIAL REPORT

Special Report ON CNN TV Watch SHOWDOWN: IRAQ anchored by CNN's Wolf Blitzer weekdays at noon (ET) for in-depth coverage of the conflict with the latest news and debate from around the world. RELATED Source: U.S. mulls Iraq 'Plan B' WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush warned Congress Tuesday not to limit his options on Iraq as the Senate prepared to debate whether to endorse military action to disarm Saddam Hussein. "We'll continue to work with the members of Congress, but I don't want to get a resolution that ties my hands," Bush said. Meanwhile, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer Tuesday offered exile or assassination as possible solutions for a standoff with Iraq, although he later said he was only making a rhetorical point. Asked about congressional estimates that deploying troops to Iraq could cost more than $9 billion a month, Fleischer said, "I can only say that the cost of a one-way ticket is substantially less than that. The cost of one bullet, the Iraqi people taking it on themselves, is substantially less than that."

CAPWEB was a free service developed by Congressional staffers who sought to promote and facilitate access to the modest, but growing, online offerings of the United States Congress. Much has happened in the ten years since CAPWEB first launched. Virtually every member of Congress maintains some presence on the Internet today, and the quantity and quality of this information continues to grow. There are now scores of web sites that monitor, report on, and link to Congress on the Internet. CAPWEB became a product, taken away from those who originally created it. But now we have it back. Welcome to
    1492: AN ONGOING VOYAGE
an Exhibit of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC
1492. Columbus. The date and the name provoke many questions related to the linking of very different parts of the world, the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean. What was life like in those areas before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? 1492: AN ONGOING VOYAGE addresses such questions by examining the rich mixture of societies coexisting in five areas of this hemisphere before European arrival. It then surveys the polyglot Mediterranean world at a dynamic turning point in its development. The exhibition examines the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600. During this period, in the wake of Columbus's voyages, Africans also arrived in the hemisphere, usually as slaves. All of these encounters, some brutal and traumatic, others more gradual, irreversibly changed the way in which peoples in the Americas led their lives. The dramatic events following 1492 set the stage for numerous cultural interactions in the Americas which are still in progress - a complex and ongoing voyage.

    Should security chief resist Congress?
(CNN) Should Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge be forced to testify before Congress to explain the Bush administration's $38 billion homeland security funding request for next year? The White House contends that Ridge, as an adviser to the president, shouldn't be required to appear on Capitol Hill a stand that has displeased many lawmakers. "Crossfire" hosts Paul Begala and Robert Novak went one-on-one over the issue Tuesday. BEGALA: Time now for Round Six, where Novak and I go at it. No guests, no gloves, no holds barred. And only one topic, the standoff continues. Both sides making threats, calling names, digging in. No, not in the Middle East, but on Capitol Hill. The issue, whether Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge should testify before the Congress as lawmakers consider the $38 billion budget request for homeland security.

an Exhibit at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC
The exhibition Scrolls From the Dead Sea: The Ancient Library of Qumran and Modern Scholarship brings before the American people a selection from the scrolls which have been the subject of intense public interest. Over the years questions have be en raised about the scrolls' authenticity, about the people who hid them away, about the period in which they lived, about the secrets the scrolls reveal, and about the intentions of the scrolls' custodians in restricting access. The Library's exhibition describes the historical context of the scrolls and the Qumran community from whence they may have originated; it also relates the story of their discovery 2,000 years later. In addition, the exhibition encourages a better understanding of the challenge s and complexities connected with scroll research. The exhibition is divided into five sections:
