Toddler-Proof Your Computer
These free tips from Sound Feelings show simple steps to prepare computers for toddlers or young children. This tutorial is for toddlerproofing or childproofing your hardware but at the same time it will give kids an incredible opportunity to develop computer literacy. Some people may want to customize a dedicated PC just for toddlers and this free information will show you ways to make this technology baby safe. The following suggestions are things that I personally did for our two-year-old, Oliver, (in 2002) with wonderful results
    Howard Richman

Also, These suggestions are geared for PC computers. Unfortunately, many of the recommendations will not work on Macs.
Create Shortcuts for Commonly Used Programs.
Create shortcuts for programs that toddlers will frequently use and place these shortcuts on the desktop. To create a shortcut, find the icon that starts the program itself. Right-click it and choose “create shortcut.” This saves the shortcut icon in the same folder as wherever the program icon is located. Then drag this new shortcut icon to the desktop. Repeat this process on all programs that you want him or her to have access to. By the way, of course you can purchase “toddler software,” but right on the system are two great programs that you already have, that you should make shortcuts to: “word pad” and “paint.”
Create a Shutdown Shortcut.

As we move into the new millennium ASPIRA is implementing initiatives to help our community members, specially our youngsters and their parents, to better position themselves in this digital era. One of the new initiatives is related to bridging the digital divide, not only between the haves and have not, but also between parents and children. This electronic toolkit presents the core curriculum for ASPIRA's Community Technology Center (CTC). The courses are designed to develop a basic understanding of the most common productivity tools. This is a dynamic site, lessons will be added as necessary responding to the needs of our trainees and our community. At the ASPIRA National Office we are thrilled about this initiative, we strongly believe that the services to be rendered will greatly benefit our young people and their families. If you need additional information or have suggestions on how to improve our services and curriculum please call John Villamil, Executive Vice President at (202) 835-3600 ext. 123 or e-mail him at Jvillamil@aspira.org

All Articles About the Author Questions and Answers Questions and Concerns from the Bleachers - Computer Literacy
by Diane S. Kendall
Sitting on the bleachers night after night in the spring twilight at Little League baseball play-offs is always good place to talk to other Moms and Dads about their concerns for their children and their school experience. This spring at our playoff rounds the two hottest topics were school projects and technology. The chatter about projects over the years has always been the same. Parents universally agree that too many projects are assigned to kids at the very end of the school year when there just isn't enough time to devote to them. In my mind it has always been advertising propaganda that the December holidays are the busiest time of the year. In any household with school-age kids, May and/or June are really the months of eternal projects, recitals, play-offs, school and other "parent required" attendance events. In contrast, concerns over technology have changed over the years. Seven years ago there was some question about what the place of technology was in the schools; this year parents are perplexed about what computer literacy really means especially with many teachers assuming kids "already know how to do everything on the computer" as one parent put it.
