davis@dri.cornell.edu D-Lib Magazine , September 1995 Computer scientists have long been using the Internet as a medium for transporting reports and documentation of many kinds, including, but not limited to, technical reports about computer science. The material available on the Internet has grown in size, and equally important, has become better organized. Three pioneering systems, UCSTRI, WATERS, and Dienst, led us to being within range of having a true computer science technical report library, with a collection built from the technical reports of the nation's computer science and engineering universities and research laboratories. This article describes the Networked Computer Science Technical Report Library (NCSTRL), an attempt to reach this goal.
First Efforts to Build a Library
NCSTRL (pronounced "ancestral", and hopefully connoting a bountiful progeny) is a direct descendent of two earlier systems, WATERS [French], which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and

    Science Library
The Science Library at the University of Georgia supports collections for research and instruction in the basic and applied sciences. Located on south campus in the Boyd Graduate Studies building, the Science Library opened in 1968 near Ag Hill as part of the strategic development of the science buildings complex which took place in the 1960s and 1970s. The collection presently has over 750,000 volumes and over 3,000 print journal titles with access to 19,000 full-text electronic journals on all subjects through the Electronic Journal Locator . The Science Library houses a broad range of materials in agriculture, biological and life sciences, human and veterinary medicine, mathematics, computer science, physical sciences, engineering, technology, and maps and atlases. Librarians and staff provide reference service and consultation with faculty, staff and students, assistance with circulation, photocopy and print services, and selection and acquisition of science materials. There is a small collection devoted to general leisure reading. There are more than 50 networked workstations on the second floor dedicated to public use in research and instruction. The Science Library's staff also supports library research facilities at the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Agricultural Experiment Stations in Griffin and Tifton, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah, Sapelo Island Marine Institute near Darien, and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Tifton.

The Science Library is located on the second floor of the Science Building (Room 215) Its primary objective is to support curricular and research needs in the Science disciplines : Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Environmental Studies, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics. However, collections in Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science are housed in Swirbul Library. The Science Library maintains periodicals collections in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Earth Science and Mathematics journals are kept in Swirbul's Periodicals area. Reference, circulation, online database searching, interlibrary loan and document delivery services are provided in the Science Library. Electronic databases, ALICAT terminals, a photocopier, and a microfilm/fiche reader/printer are available. Science databases available are Biological Abstracts, Medline, and Current Contents (Life Sciences and Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences). Science, Technology and Medical Information (STM) is also available through other online databases, such as OCLC's FirstSearch and EBSCOhost. Course materials are kept at the Circulation Desk. Instruction on how to use Science and Technology databases and Internet resources is provided on a regular basis.

The Frances Penrose Owen Science and Engineering Library serves the College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Sciences and the College of Agriculture and Home Economics on the Pullman campus of Washington State University. The Fischer Agricultural Sciences Library collects materials in the subject areas of crop sciences, entomology, environmental sciences, horticulture, landscape architecture, mycology, plant pathology, soil sciences and weed science. When the Owen Library was built in the 1970's, it was planned to be a building that would never need to physically expand. Librarians and teaching faculty of the day thought that the use of microforms would create a library collection that would grow in volume at an extremely slow rate. Instead, electronic materials, principally electronic journals, are starting to make this goal more reachable, despite large increases in our holdings of printed books and journals over the years. These electronic materials also allow WSU students, faculty and staff to use more and more of Owen’s collections 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, whether they are on campus or elsewhere in the state The Owen Library includes a map room , many public computers, Microsoft Office workstations hot-wired study carrels and
