Computer Science: A guide to selected resources on the Internet
    June 2001

    by Michael Knee
Computer scientists and engineers design and build computers and associated technologies, including the hardware, software, and operating systems. Computer science also encompasses theoretical and mathematical aspects, such as the design and analysis of algorithms, performance studies of systems and components, and reliability studies. Computer scientists seek to answer the fundamental question, What can be automated?
Computer scientists were early users of the Internet, and there are numerous Web sites related to computer science and computing. This is a selected guide to some of the more useful resources. Metasites/starting points

The University of Chicago computer science collection is located primarily in Eckhart Library (Eckhart Hall 217). The collection includes research level monographs and journals in theoretical computer science, including mathematical aspects of computing, computational complexity, algorithms, logic, and the use of computers to solve mathematical and scientific problems. Because of space considerations, most low-use materials have been transferred to The John Crerar Library. The transfers include all materials in popular computing, most pre-1980 monographs, and most inactive journals. All popular computing materials are located in The John Crerar Library. Current handbooks, including books of C and C++, Java, Unix, Perl, and html, are available on permanent reserve in Crerar. These books circulate for 48 hours.

NOTICE: No password is required for any downloads. Downloading sometimes fails, either because your browser mistakenly assumes a password is needed or for other reasons. If so, try using another browser or an FTP package. If that doesn't work, there might be a problem at your end or at your ISP, perhaps a firewall issue. Then you would need to talk to a system manager on your end.
