Research directions
Theoretical foundations of computer science and natural computing. Our areas of research are:
  • DNA based computing In particular, we design and (in cooperation with molecular biologists) conduct laboratory experiments testing the suitability of biomolecules for computing. Also, we develop theoretical models for various aspects of molecular computing; this includes models for recombination and self-assembly.
  • The theory of formal languages In particular such fields are investigated as: grammars; automata and transducers; logical descriptions of languages and transductions; combinatorial structure of formal languages; models for natural computation; attribute grammars.

Dictionary of Algorithms and Data Structures
This is a dictionary of algorithms, algorithmic techniques, data structures, archetypical problems, and related definitions. Algorithms include common functions, such as Ackermann's function . Problems include traveling salesman and Byzantine generals . Some entries have links to implementations and more information. Index pages list entries by area and by type . The two-level index has a total download 1/20 as big as this page. Don't use this site to cheat. Teachers, contact us if we can help. To define or correct terms, please contact Paul E. Black . We need help in automata theory, combinatorics, parallel or randomized algorithms, heuristics, and quantum computing. We do not include algorithms particular to business data processing, communications, operating systems or distributed algorithms, programming languages, AI, graphics, or numerical analysis: it is tough enough covering "general" algorithms and data structures. However, if you want to tackle one of these areas, we'll consider including them. Some terms with a leading variable, such as

    44. Distributed Systems Laboratory
Argonne National Laboratory has recently established the Distributed Supercomputing Laboratory (DSL) within its Mathematics and computer science Division. The DSL is both a stateof-the-art experimental facility and a focal point for research and development at the intersection of high-performance computing and networking.

    Distributed Systems Laboratory
    Argonne National Laboratory
University of Chicago The Distributed Systems Laboratory (DSL) is a research and software development group within the Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division at Argonne National Laboratory and the Department of Computer Science at The University of Chicago A Grid is a persistent infrastructure that supports computation-intensive and data-intensive collaborative activities, especially when these activities span organizations. Grid computing facilitates the formation of "Virtual Organizations" for shared use of distributed computational resources. Under the leadership of Dr. Ian Foster , the DSL hosts research and development activities designed to realize the potential of "Grids" for computational science and engineering. Together with Carl Kesselman's Center for Grid Technologies at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute , we are co-founders of the Globus Project TM , a highly-collaborative international and multidisciplinary effort to make Grid computing a reality.

    CSM
The Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM) is ORNL's premier source of basic and applied research in high-performance computing, applied mathematics, and intelligent systems. Basic and applied research programs are focused on computational sciences, intelligent systems, and information technologies. Our mission includes working on important national priorities with advanced computing systems, working cooperatively with U.S. Industry to enable efficient, cost-competitive design, and working with universities to enhance science education and scientific awareness. Our researchers are finding new ways to solve problems beyond the reach of most computers and are putting powerful software tools into the hands of students, teachers, government researchers, and industrial scientists.
