Introduction to Computer Science using Java
Revised and Expanded, July 2003
Bradley Kjell, Central Connecticut State University
T his is a first course in Computer Science using the programming language Java. It covers the fundamentals of programming and of computer science. For maximum benefit, go though these notes interactively, thinking about and answering the question at the bottom of each page. There are about 15 pages per chapter. If you spend about 3 minutes per page each chapter will take about 45 minutes; much more, if you copy and run some of the programs. If you are a beginning programmer, plan on spending more than a month with this. These notes assume that you have the Java Development Kit (JDK) version 1.3 or later from Sun (http://www.javasoft.com) and a text editor such as NotePad. They may be used with more sophisticated environments, as well. For more about these notes check the frequently asked questions. Best viewed at 800 x 600 A German translation of these notes, done by Heinrich Gailer, is available at www.gailer-net.de/tutorials/java/java-toc.html

CSE Professor's Research is Helping to Unlock Genome Evolutions
CSE professor Pavel Pevzner and UCSD Math assistant professor Glenn Tesler along with their journal paper co-author Guillaume Bourque of the University of Montreal produced the cover of the April 2004 edition of Genome Research. For the first time, it depicts the course of evolution for the X chromosome in humans, rats and mice tracing the genomic architecture of mammalian ancestors from a common ancestor 80 million years ago. "It contributes to the solution of the so-called original synteny problem in biology," said Pevzner, the Ronald R. Taylor Professor of Computer Science and Engineering. "While scientists routinely find bones that lead to (often unrealistic) reconstructions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals on movie screens and in toy stores, this is the first rigorous reconstruction of the genomic makeup of our mammalian ancestors."

    http://www.cs.iastate.edu/gradadm/index.shtml
The Department of Computer Science offers research-based advanced training leading to a Ph.D. in Computer Science. The department also offers an M.S. degree. The department has strong research programs in Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Complexity Theory and Complex Systems, Databases, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Programming Languages, Multimedia Systems, Networks, Robotics, Software Engineering, and Theory of Computing. Additional information about the department (research areas, faculty, research projects, courses, etc.) can be found here . In a typical year, approximately 100-125 full-time students are enrolled in the graduate program. In fall 2003, the Computer Science graduate program had approximately 80 Ph.D. students and 40 M.S. students. Recipients of Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from Iowa State University have a virtually 100% success rate at obtaining top quality jobs in either academia or industry. In addition to Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science, interdepartmental Ph.D. programs in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB) Human-Computer Interaction , and Neuroscience offer opportunities for research-based training of Computer Science graduate students. Students interested in pursuing these opportunities should apply for admission to the respective intedepartmental program as well. Computer Science department also participates in an interdepartmental MS degree program in
