computer literacy
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition (education) computer literacy - Basic skill in use of computers, from the perspective of such skill being a necessary societal skill.
The term was coined by Andrew Molnar, while director of the Office of Computing Activities at the National Science Foundation
"We started computer literacy in '72 [...] We coined that phrase. It's sort of ironic. Nobody knows what computer literacy is. Nobody can define it. And the reason we selected [it] was because nobody could define it, and [...] it was a broad enough term that you could get all of these programs together under one roof" (cited in Aspray, W., (September 25, 1991) "Interview with Andrew Molnar," OH 234. Center for the History of Information Processing, Charles Babbage Institute, University of Minnesota).
The term, as a coinage, is similar to earlier coinages, such as "visual literacy", which Merriam-Webster dates to 1971, and the more recent "media literacy".
Some words with "computer literacy" in the definition:

83. Computer Literacy In TV Production
computer literacy. Finally, after months of searching for a job, Dawn had to admit that sidestepping computer literacy hadn t been a good idea.
http://www.cybercollege.com/pcs.htm
Computer Literacy O ne of my former students recently relayed this story about trying to find a job. We'll call her Dawn. Dawn graduated several years ago. She had been a successful model, and employment had not been a problem—until recently. When Dawn did start trying to find another type of job, she found in interview after interview that computer literacy (familiarity with a computer and major computer programs) was a prerequisite to employment. Since Dawn had been a bit computer phobic while in college—our school didn't require computer literacy at that time—she managed to get a degree without ever confronting a computer. Finally, after months of searching for a job, Dawn had to admit that sidestepping computer literacy hadn't been a good idea. She enrolled in a computer course at an adult vocational school. Ironically, although she had been computer phobic, she took to computers so much that after about a year she opened her own computer-based business. And, no, I'm not making this up! A round every corner in TV stations and production facilities today you'll see desktop and laptop computers. They are on the desk of the receptionist when you enter the building, on the desks of sales and continuity employees, on every desk in the TV newsroom, in editing bays, and even in production control rooms.

One hallmark of the Oregon Curriculum Network approach is its focus on spatial geometry. For example, in this essay, I emphasize the following math facts:
  • various number series correspond to specific sphere packing arrangements a square number is the sum of two consecutive triangular numbers the sum of consecutive icosahedral shell numbers is a cuboctahedral number triangular square , and tetrahedral numbers show up in Pascal's Triangle Pascal's Triangle connects to the golden ratio phi ) via the Fibonacci numbers the golden rectangle is embedded in the icosahedron
Given this geometric focus, students will naturally want to do some modeling. Hands-on projects will of course require supplies of various kinds: When it comes to computer graphics, we also need to supply some hardware and software tools. One promising approach (the one used in this essay) is to harness the combined power of:
  • Python , a free, cross-platform computer language with development environment Povray , a free, cross-platform ray tracing package, plus scripting language HTML , a cross-platform markup language for making text and graphics browsable
Python is not confined to performing in a graphics-related role in this curriculum, but serves as a general purpose workhorse. Python notation provides an alternative, human-readable syntax for various core algorithms (some going back hundreds or even thousands of years), thereby capturing the whole idea of "rules" and "rule following" (using Wittgenstein's terminology) with the computer (

Most Colleges and Departments provide access to general computing resources, which include word-processing, desktop publishing, data processing, access to the Internet, membership of newsgroups and email. The use of these resources should be encouraged in the synthesis and presentation of work (e.g. writing of reports, collation and analysis of data, database and spreadsheet management). Formal training in the use of computers is provided by some Colleges and Departments (for particular specialised packages) and by the University Computing Service. Many Departments place teaching material to supplement the lectures on their websites.

Computer literacy test a passport to success
By 2006, all Utah graduating students will have to certify By Amy Choate
Deseret Morning News
It worked. At the conclusion of her elective Microsoft skills course, all 40 of Covington's students were certified by taking a standardized computer literacy exam.
Covington, a Murray High School teacher, is part of a statewide program to require standard levels of computer certification for Utah students. By forming a partnership with Certiport, an American Fork-based business, the Utah State Office of Education is making efforts to bring students up to global computer standards.
"We asked ourselves, what does computer literacy mean?" said Russell Klein, business education specialist for Utah State Office of Education. "We wanted to create a course that met everyone's needs on every level; the public education level, higher education level and in the industry."
document.write(Banner("area=dn.local.position1y/adsize=300x250",300,250)) So the state education office turned to Certiport, a corporation that specializes in administering standardized tests to evaluate computer skills across the world.

And now you know the true meaning of computer literacy and its vital role in a world gone mad with hardware and software. If, after
http://www.ewin.com/articles/pooter.htm
Your Computer and You
I have often maintained that, if one is to succeed in any endeavor in the 1990's, one must be computer literate. Oh, I don't mean that one has to know how the darn things work; one only has to know how to work on the darn things. Hardware isn't half as important as software.
It is software that will drive the world. By recent count, there are now over 50 personnel applications just for the PC. Soon, you will be able to just plug in numbers, and have your computer spit out an EEO-1 report! What used to take days to accomplish on a Bowmar Brain, takes only seconds. Why, one can even get the square root of 1,260,111 in a millisecond; it doesn't matter that you don't need to know what that square root is. It's just nice to know that it can be done.
So, it's time once again to provide the novice computer user with the why's and wherefore's of making use of this invaluable tool. You've undoubtedly read about DOS and Windows and keyboards; it is my intent that you should know what they are and how they can benefit you. Further, computer lingo is so full of acronyms, that it is impossible to learn anything during a conversation without the gist of that jargon.
WYSIWYG : Pronounced "Qwerty," it is the Bulgarian acronym for the translation from keypad to screen.

Even more important than how to use computers, are the questions about the social consequences and moral responsibilities of new technology in our day-to-day life. Today, time and space are compressed into cyberspace, a mediated world unto itself. "The computer is not the goal, but the tool. The goal is the development of empowered and fully functioning citizens in an information-based society."

I hope this will make you realize how important this project is in our community, because it gives us many new opportunities in life. "
Nontyatyambo Kulati
The year 2003 started very well for us. Approximately 200 people from the community have registered for the classes thus far. We expect this total to increase during the year. Most of the people are unemployed and some are school children. There are also employed students who come after hours or on Saturdays. The school children come from as far as Mbekweni, Mfuleni and Kraaifontein.
We are looking forward to meeting all our new students during the next few months ! Felansia Philander Comments from people attending the computer classes!
