Everyday, advertisements like this one appear in the newspaper displaying the latest computer systems for sale at impossible prices. How can the average consumer begin to appreciate the obscure terminology used in these ads? - "words" like MHz RAM MB SVGA , etc. Furthermore, how can consumers determine which features they need to look for to obtain a computer that will do what they want it to?

E veryone picks up bits and pieces of information while using and working around computers. This can leave some pretty big gaps in your information landscape. These lessons are an attempt to fill in the missing pieces and to tie it all together. The "Illustrated" part means there will be lots of pictures. Other sets of lecture notes I have seen online are pretty much bare text. While the writing is often great, such text-only notes do not take advantage of the possibilities of web pages. So you will see some animations and graphics that enhance the text and, hopefully, make it clearer. Topics Computer Basics

6. Computer Literacy: 1996
Man is a social animal. He cannot exist without a society. A society, in turn, depends on certain things which everyone within that society takes for granted. like those found in discussions of
http://communication.ucsd.edu/bjones/comp_lit_paper.html
James Baldwin "A Talk to Teachers" In 1976 John Nevison coined the term computer literacy and unwittingly sparked a long, complex debate when he wrote: Because of the widespread use of elementary computing skill, there should be an appropriate term of this skill. It should suggest an acquaintance with the rudiments of computer programming, much as the term literacy connotes a familiarity with the fundamentals of reading and writing, and it should have a precise definition that all can agree on. It is reasonable to suggest that a person who has written a computer program should be called literate in computing . This is an extremely elementary definition. Literacy is not fluency" (Nevison 1976:401, italics in original). The "precise definition" that Nevison called for has yet to emerge from the voluminous debate on the topic and the discussion has become part of the much larger debates about equality in education and the "back to basics" movement. This discourse is and has been about two things: it is a debate about what the term "computer literacy" should encompass - how it should be taught - and a discussion of the value to US society of pursuing some kind of universal computer literacy. It seems as though every educator and education writer has some opinion about the so called "computer revolution," how it is going to reshape education and how to best bring that revolution into the classroom. The range of the debate runs from Nevison's original idea - computer literacy as programming ability - to the idea that quickly followed on it heels - the notion that programming ability is passe and what matters is the ability to chose and run applications.

Stop Saying ``Computer Literacy''!
Brian Harvey
University of California, Berkeley [A version of this paper was published in Classroom Computer News in 1983.] As computers become more widely used in schools, educators have invented many different ways to use them. The different uses for computers are based on quite diverse models of what the purposes of computer education should be. One very common approach is based on the notion of ``computer literacy'': the idea that there is some basic familiarity with computers which all students need in order to compete in the job market, or to be informed citizens. The purpose of this paper is to question whether that notion is valid.
The Importance of Metaphor
Several educators have questioned the specific details of particular ``literacy'' plans, while accepting the overall concept. ``Computer literacy doesn't mean X,'' they say, ``it means Y.'' For example, Arthur Luehrmann says, ``[C]omputer literacy must also mean the ability to do computing, and not merely to recognize, identify, or be aware of alleged facts about computing.'' (Luehrmann, 1981) His argument is that a computer curriculum should give students actual programming experience, not just reading about computers in a book. But Luehrmann accepts the concept of computer literacy itself, the idea that there is something which every student must learn. He questions only the details of just what this something is.

COMP 1200, University of Memphis
Note to viewers: This web page is no longer an official part of the course. However, I knew a lot of people on the net liked it and used it, so I've kept it online. Please be aware that some of the information may be out of date; I haven't updated these notes since January 1997. I'm in the process of putting together a new site which will probably be named paulryburn.com; it will be up in Decmeber.
COMP 1200 Computer Literacy is a required course for many majors at the University of Memphis. No prior computer knowledge is required to enroll in the course. By the end of the semester, students will be familiar with both the hardware and software components of computer systems; they will also have an appreciation for the ways computers and society have changed each other.
This web page is an attempt by instructor Paul Ryburn to supplement the textbook and lab material. Hopefully it will aid COMP 1200 students; however, these notes cannot possibly duplicate the demonstrations and discussions that occur in the classroom. Students should not use this web site as a substitute for attending class. If you are browsing these pages from outside the University of Memphis, welcome! Although it is impossible to put all components of the course online, I have tried to arrange the Web pages so that anyone can learn quite a bit from them, whether taking COMP 1200 or not. If you're a prospective college student, why not take a look at the

An Article by your Guide Dawn Rosenberg McKay As I sit here typing away on my keyboard, I realize that I am as comfortable holding a computer mouse as I am holding a pen. That wasn't always the case, though. As a high school senior taking my first class in BASIC, I marveled at the freshmen who were effortlessly creating error-free and complex programs. I did not reach that level of comfort around computers until many years later, after being exposed to them a little in college and more in graduate school. Computers have come a long way since I took that first class in BASIC and, I guess, so have I. I was shocked and disappointed, when a college professor friend of mine told me about his students, juniors and seniors at a highly competitive university, who knew little about computers, and did not know how to retrieve an emailed file and operate a simple Windows based program. "How is that possible?" I asked. Hadn't computers been a standard part of their education hadn't they learned reading, writing, and computing?
