Introducing The First Adult-Quality Computer Keyboard Specially Designed To Fit The Little Fingers Of Children
According to William Frankel, vice president of marketing and sales for Datadesk Technologies the company that designed and developed LittleFingers®, "It's almost impossible for a small child to learn to touch-type correctly on adult-sized keys they're just too big and their fingers can't reach. Because of this size and spacing problem, most youngsters resort to the ‘hunt and peck' technique which is a difficult habit to break."
"With basic typing skills now being taught in the second and third grade, having a keyboard that fits is a real advantage for any child wanting to develop good computing skills," Frankel says. LittleFingers® is much more than a keyboard, it's an educational tool that has many advantages over traditional computer keyboards, including:
    • A second standard adult keyboard can be plugged in and used simultaneously
    • Mac and PC compatible even if you change systems, your investment is protected

Curriculum Materials for the Secondary Electronic Keyboard Lab
by Dr. Thomas Rudolph Home Articles Index Back Electronic keyboard labs are becoming more and more popular in middle schools and high schools throughout the country. Teachers are finding that a lab can be a productive way to enhance student motivation and learning. One of the challenges is selecting appropriate curriculum materials for the electronic keyboard lab. This article highlights some of the areas to consider.
    Hardware Options
The options for keyboard labs can be grouped into three general categories:
    1. Electronic keyboards
    2. Electronic Keyboards with built-in MIDI sequencers
    3. Electronic Keyboards and a computer for each station
    Piano Keyboard Skills
    Ensemble and Chamber Music
Once students have acquired some basic keyboard skills, they can begin to practice and play duets, trios, and quartets. There are keyboard ensemble books available from several publishers including Warner Brothers and J.D. Wall Publishing. In order for students to play in small groups, the lab must be equipped with a teacher controller unit. Any method book of duets, trios, or chamber music can also be used in the keyboard lab. For example, band or string chamber music books can be used as most electronic keyboard models have a transpose function. Transposed parts such as trumpet parts can be played on the keyboard by transposing the keyboard so it sounds the appropriate pitch.
    Percussion Sounds
Students enjoy playing percussion and drum sounds so be sure to purchase a keyboard model that includes a percussion bank. Every General MIDI compatible keyboard has several percussion banks available. Students can accompany recorded songs and participate in ensembles by playing the keyboard as a percussion instrument.

Interim Statement of Basic Expectations of Student Computer Skills
At the request of the Vice-Principal (Information), this document has been drafted as an interim statement of the University's expectations of student computing skills. It is expected to lead to discussion by ISAC and the Academic Programs Committee. An issue that has not yet been addressed is whether or not such expectations should apply to students on entry to the University, in the manner of University expectations of English language skills. If not, then the question is how the University can or should address any gaps between the expectations and reality.

    Sakura - Japanese On-line - Monash University
Exercise - Keyboard Skills In general, long vowel sounds in Japanese are represented in roomaji by doubling the vowel or placing a bar above the vowel i.e. using a diacritic macron mark. Long vowels such as "ii" , "aa" and "ee" simply involve doubling and generally present no difficulty when typing on a computer keyboard. Just remember that for long vowels following a consonant + vowel syllable eg. "kii" you must type in the hiragana that correspond directly to "ki" and "i" ie. shii kaa However, this method does not always work in the case of long "o" sounds. For example: kinoo is the way "yesterday" is generally written in roomaji. However, it is written in hiragana as . If you type "kinoo" into the computer you will get , the wrong spelling. Therefore, you need to type in `kinou` to get . However, there are some cases where typing "u" is not appropriate. For example the city Osaka is generally written in roomaji as Oosaka and the hiragana version is . So you must type in "oosaka" to get the correct spelling. The following table gives the general roomaji version and the hiragana for a number of long and short vowel sounds.

Keyboarding is a skill for everybody these days. Gone are the days when "typing" was something for secretaries and writers. Students need to record their thoughts, write class papers and send e-mail messages to friends across town or across the world. Third grade is a good time to start teaching keyboarding skills. Children have the coordination necessary by then. Plus, they often have the desire to learn. For home teaching, buy one of the popular keyboarding CD ROMs available such as "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing". With encouragement from you and some self-motivation from your child, this may be enough to get started. Some schools include keyboarding in their computer curriculum. If this occurs, your child may be regularly practicing keyboarding drills. Be sure and ask what software is used and how the drills are made to be fun. Many children learn at after school enrichment classes. Look for an enrichment class that uses a variety of software programs, alternates accuracy drills with speed drills and gives students frequent encouragement to improve their skills. But maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. IBM recently began selling voice-recognition software called

Keyboarding Skills: When Should They Be Taught?
With an enormous computer presence in schools, the question is no longer whether to teach keyboarding but when to teach it. President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore have challenged the nation to ensure that all children are technologically literate by the 21st century. A "pillar" of this challenge is, "Modern computers and learning devices will be accessible to every student." With computers accessible to every student, most teachers and experts in education say the teaching of keyboarding is a given. But when is the best age to teach students proper keyboarding technique?

Saskatchewan Education's document A Handbook for Educators: Keyboarding provides a "starter kit" of activities beginning on page 16. The following activities are in addition to those in the above document.
    • Develop a bulletin board display illustrating proper care and handling of the equipment (hardware) and/or software students will be using.
    • Develop a display illustrating the basic parts of the equipment.
    • Show a film or a video illustrating proper technique while keyboarding. High school students could model and develop the video.
    • Demonstrate proper and improper technique while keyboarding. Technique is extremely important in the development of keyboarding skill and must be continuously encouraged. Keyboarding should not be taught sitting down but rather by moving around the room motivating and praising students. Written evaluations of students' techniques are important, but verbal encouragement and reinforcement of good technique on a daily basis will be beneficial to learners.
    • Videotape students so they can evaluate their own technique.
