Welcome
This home page is devoted to Advanced Computer Architecture Group(ACAG). At UC Irvine, we have developed several processors over the years (based on VLIW, superscalar, multithreaded, and reconfigurable architecture). Currently, our main focus is on a project called MorphoSys (reconfigurable computing).
Projects
MorphoSys MorphoSys is a Reconfigurable Computer Architecture that is composed of a software programmable processing unit called TinyRISC and a reconfigurable hardware unit called RC Array. MorphoSys M2 is currently running at 450MHz (simulated), using 0.13-micron technology and with an area of 8x8mm or 16x16mm with onchip memory. IBMR The Image Based Modeling and Rendering Lab is the beginning of new research area in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department (EECS) at the University of California, Irvine. Our area of reasearch is mainly focused in 3D modeling of objects from video stream, with a photorealistic quality; we apply these techniques to model rigid objects but also want to animated characters, obtainning motion behaviors. Our lab is equipped with the latest Intel based computer with state-of-the-art graphic cards. We mainly develop in C, C++ and Java Program Languages.

    PiSMA: A Parallel VSM Architecture
by Dimitris Lioupis Andreas Pipis Maria Smirli , and Michael Stefanidakis
    Introduction
There is an increased interest in large scale multiprocessors composed of a large number of processing elements. The two main models of multiprocessor architectures, the shared memory model [ ] and the distributed memory model [ ], suffer from serious limitations because of their nature. Distributed memory architectures promise better scalability and increased performance but are more difficult to program efficiently. Shared memory architectures, on the other hand, have a better programming model. Their disadvantage, however, is the limited bandwidth of the shared bus, which restricts scalability. This paper presents a parallel computer architecture, called PiSMA (Parallel vIrtually Shared Memory Architecture), introduced in [ ]. PiSMA architecture combines the benefits of both multiprocessor models mentioned above, resulting in an efficient parallel architecture. The simplicity of the underlying hardware permits the scaling of PiSMA, utilizing new generations of microprocessors, without the need to redesign the whole system. PiSMA can be used with or without a global communication network depending on the type of applications it is used for, as described in [ ]. In the following sections a detailed description of the PiSMA architecture, its programming model, the

    http://www.science.uva.nl/research/arch/
    About our group
The Computer Architecture and Parallel Systems Group focuses on the design and evaluation of advanced computing systems consisting of hardware as well as software components. The work has a strong experimental orientation with an emphasis on modeling, simulation and benchmarking of man made systems. Moreover, research on federated/distributed database architectures and distributed robot architectures is also included.
The work on system architecture aims at the integrated design of architectures, with a specific interest in modeling and simulation of computing systems. The computing architecture is studied as a whole, encompassing a number of layers such as: application, compiler, operating system and run-time support and hardware. System architecture design work is validated via experiments either to check the model or the real architecture. Design work includes application specification, the mapping of applications to the machines and compiler design. The experimental work includes modeling, simulation and validation of both applications and underlying architecture, simulation at different levels and the development of benchmark sets.
The research on federated information management for complex high performance multi-system applications focuses on the design and development of architectures and systems that support the inter-operability and integration of cooperative information systems. The federated cooperative-system facility preserves every node's autonomy to have both private and sharable information, supports the heterogeneity of information representation in different nodes, and provides novel distributed schema management and distributed query processing methodologies.

    Research
My research focus in the design of high performance and efficient computer systems. Computer systems are formed using integrated hardware and software components, which makes it hard to design one part without a good understanding of the other. With that in mind, my research includes computer architecture, operating systems, applications, compilers and their interactions. Currently, I've been looking at the interactions that take place in a database server. These studies motivated our work on Hierarchical Computing , which is the topic of my dissertation.
