Teach Ergonomics To Kids
FOR MORE INFORMATION Caring for Kids Article Archive Children commonly use computers in this day and age. Both at school and at home, kids can spend countless hours in front of a computer screen. It seems harmless enough, but children can develop injuries if their computer workstation is not ergonomically sound. Positioning At The Computer Bad posture can lead to more serious health problems down the road. Many children sit awkwardly at the computer, increasing their risk of hand, back, head and neck strain. A child's upper and lower back should be well supported by a chair. This may mean a sturdy chair with a high back and possibly inserting a rolled-up towel or pillow to support the lower back. The seat of a chair should not be tilted forward. A child's hips and thighs should be at approximately a 90-degree angle while seated. The thighs and knees should also be at approximately a 90-degree angle, and lastly the ankles and feet should be at approximately a 90-degree ankle. If a child's feet are dangling, a phonebook, a stool, or even a wooden block could be used under the child's feet to create support. The best arrangement is for children to be seated in a position so that their eyes line up with the upper portion of the computer screen. Imagine that the computer screen is divided in half horizontally. If you were then to divide the upper section in half again, that's where a child's eyes should be aimed.

By Margaret J. Erthal Typewriting, once the domain of business education teachers, was taught in high school. The vocational business curriculum dictated a year of Typewriting I at the freshman level, a year of Typewriting II at the sophomore level, a year of Office Practice and Shorthand I at the junior level, and a year of Secretarial Practice and Shorthand II at the senior level. This curriculum was adhered to by the majority of schools as the objective of business education was vocational in nature. The introduction of the personal computer changed the business education curriculum and the method in which typewriting instruction was delivered. Computers allowed students to become more efficient as they keyed letters, memos, reports, and tables within the business education classroom. Soon, other disciplines began to take advantage of the efficiency and effectiveness of computers.English teachers required typed papers in English Composition class, and mathematics teachers used BASIC programming to expand on paper and pencil problems. A new class, Computer Literacy, appeared in school curricula and eventually achieved the status of a "required" course. Business teachers believed they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach Computer Literacy, but were soon faced with science and math teachers who also felt they possessed the knowledge and expertise to teach this course.

Use Keyboard to Spell Shortcuts on Computer March 22, 1999 By: LAWRENCE J. MAGID I 'm a big fan of anything that lets me work less and accomplish more. That's why I use keyboard shortcuts on programs I use regularly. I've created even more shortcuts by using the macro feature in Microsoft Word and, thanks to QuicKeys ($49.95) from CE Software it's also possible for both Windows and Mac users to automate virtually any task.
Although using the mouse to select icons and menu items is easy, sometimes it's even easier to use keyboard shortcuts to perform certain tasks. You can copy a selection of text from one file to another, for example, by selecting copy from the Edit menu. But in most programs you can accomplish the same thing by typing Ctrl C in Windows or Command C if you're using a Mac. Windows users can use the File menu to exit a program, but pressing Alt F4 can get you out faster and even exit you from Windows itself. If you make a mistake while typing, Ctrl Z will undo what you just did. For more Windows shortcuts, visit http://www.larrysworld.com/shortcuts.htm

How to teach your child computers, and computer skills Lately there have been a barrage of software titles released that are geared toward the diaper-set children nine months to three years of age. There are so many titles available that this new genre of software has now been dubbed "lapware." The idea behind lapware is that tiny children sit on their parent's lap to play at the computer. It's not uncommon to find age ranges as young as nine months listed on lapware boxes. Has the software industry gone loony? We'll put things in perspective for you, and explain when and how it is appropriate to introduce a young child to the wonderful world of computers and, yes, nine months is definitely too young for computer play! So, when should a child start on the computer? In homes with computers, many 18-month-old toddlers may notice that things happen on a computer screen, however, most young children do not develop the spatial thinking needed to move a mouse with purpose until they're two to three years of age or older. Since manipulating a mouse is a cornerstone to learning and playing in the world of computers, a good time to start a child on the computer is between two and three years old. If you don't already own a computer, and you're planning to buy your first computer system for your child, you can wait until he or she is between three and five years old.

New computer games teach keyboard shortcuts Sure, keyboard shortcuts save time. But who has the time to learn them? For $60, those who take "the long way" can play two new computer games geared to teach shortcuts. "Key Commando: The Key To Killer Production" and "Monster Commands: The Key To Killer Productivity" have just been released by AdOut's Jeff Turner. Key Commando teaches skills in Adobe Illustrator 7 and 8, Adobe PhotoShop 4 and 5, Quark XPress 3 and 4, Multi-Ad Creator 4.0, Multi-Ad Creator2, Mac OS 8.5 and Windows 98. Monster Commands teaches skills in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Windows 98. Both games are cross-platform, supporting Windows and Mac operating systems. In both games, a player's mission is to perform the requested shortcut function as quickly as possible. The first levels teach basic program commands and as the game progresses, requests become more complicated and response time shrinks. An incorrect response results in a display of the correct key command. A practice area allows players to fine-tune their skills before they begin the game.

The problem with standard keyboards is that letters are assigned to the keys in a way that makes them more or less equally accessible to both hands. Thus, when one- handers use a standard keyboard, they must reach awkwardly for frequently used letters. The Dvorak One-Hand Keyboard, developed at the Typewriting Institute for the Handicapped, solves this problem by redistributing the letter assignments so that the work is more equally distributed to the strongest fingers of either the left or right hand. This principle is illustrated by the chart to the left. Two keyboards are produced, one for the right hand and one for the left. A special Dvorak textbook is also available and can be used either as a home study course or a classroom text. The Dvorak literature claims that any school or training facility can teach typing to a one-hander using these keyboards with no special knowledge or supervision required on the part of the teacher. It also indicates that, in some cases, one-hand typists can acquire a special keyboard through the Veteran's Administration, State Vocational Rehabilitation Department, or other agencies. Considering their duty under the Americans with Disabilities Act to make "reasonable accommodation" for employees with disabilities, employers may also be sources of funds to purchase these keyboards. If you already are used to the standard keyboard and type well on it, you may want to think twice about purchasing a new keyboard. If you are just starting, however, one of these keyboards may be for you.

On the bulletin board in my studio is a sign that says: “Remember! Practice doesn’t make perfect. Only good practice makes perfect.” Every student has to tell me at least one “good” way they can practice each piece in their assignment.
Begin each lesson with dictation, designed to put ear training in familiar terms. For example: The teacher plays a short familiar phrase (London Bridge is Falling Down) and the student listens with eyes closed and plays back the segment. Then, the student is encouraged to write the segment in notation, with help from the teacher if necessary. The whole process should take five minutes or less.
Choose a favorite recording and, each week, offer students a listening experience, perhaps titled “Music You’ve Just GOT to Hear!”
For a memory project, copy a composition and cut it up in small sections. Mix it up and create a puzzle game; practice starting places and so forth.
