Types of keyboards Keyboard layouts ... Keyboard definitions KEYBOARD ABCs The keyboard is the main input peripheral used by all computers. The keyboard allows for user input and action with the computer. Much like many type writers the keyboard has all the letters of the alphabet, numbers - 9 and additional special operational keys. CARPAL TUNNEL INFORMATION Carpal Tunnel is an inflammatory disorder that affects the carpal (wrist) part of a specific nerve. Repetitive stress, physical trauma, certain diseases, or specific hereditary conditions can inflame the sheaths that surround wrist tendons. With the swelling of small blood vessels, pressure increases on the nerve and disrupts its functioning; numbness, pain, and a loss of manual dexterity result. Treatment can vary from Splinting the wrist, drugs and in severe cases surgery. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may occur as a user does repetitive motion on his or her keyboard. There have been several methods to help prevent this from happening. One of the most common way in preventing this is purchasing a Natural Style keyboard. This type of keyboard allows the hands to be in a more suitable position. These keyboards can be purchased from any computer retailer. It is recommended you test the keyboard before purchasing it. The keyboard can be difficult to use for some users. The following is an example of such a keyboard.

catproof your computer
When cats walk or climb on your keyboard, they can enter random commands and data, damage your files, and even crash your computer. This can happen whether you are near the computer or have suddenly been called away from it. PawSense is a software utility that helps protect your computer from cats. It quickly detects and blocks cat typing, and also helps train your cat to stay off the computer keyboard.
  • Every time your computer boots up, Paw Sense will automatically start up in the background to watch over your computer system.
  • Even while you use your other software, PawSense constantly monitors keyboard activity. PawSense analyzes keypress timings and combinations to distinguish cat typing from human typing. PawSense normally recognizes a cat on the keyboard within one or two pawsteps.
  • If a cat gets on the keyboard, PawSense makes a

A Low-Tech Obstacle to a Higher-Tech Future:
The Keyboard Problem
by William Grassie
Perhaps the biggest obstacle to wide-spread and effective use of computers in education and business alike is not RAM, ROM, MHz or Band Width. Rather, it is QWERTY, that damn keyboard, which frustrates beginners and literally cripples experts.
Back in 1872, when the type-writing-machine was "in vented", Shoales and Company laid out the keyboard intentionally to make one type slowly, less the two-fingered typist jam up the hammers on this new fangled contraption. A hundred twenty-three years later, ten finger touch-typing is in, the typewriter is gone, but this contorted layout of the letters on the computer keyboard remains. The standard keyboard layout is immortalized with the name QWERTY, for the six letters on top row of the left hand.
In 1936, efficiency experts August Dvorak and William Dealey realized the absurdity of this situation and rede signed the layout of the typewriter, but his new layout never really caught on. And yet the adoption of the "Simplified Keyboard" is perhaps the biggest obstacle to widespread computer literacy (i.e. keyboard literacy). And computer literacy is increasingly important in all aspects of our post -industrial society.
Few students in my university know how to touch-type and many are still positively afraid of computers. The key board itself accounts for a large part of that dislike of computers. Children now in elementary school and pre-school are beginning a life time of typing on a keyboard layout that will stunt their development and ruin their hands with years of use.

Keyboards
The quintessential input device, the keyboard, despite its similarities to the typewriter, is nevertheless the subject of great confusion. Some of the most important, basic keys are misunderstood. Some even fail to recognize that hitting a letter on the keyboard causes the same letter to appear on the screen. With a keyboard as a prop, hysterical antics of many sorts can follow.
We have a service contract at a local college. I got a call one day from someone who said that their Mac IIsi was having a problem. Upon questioning him, he said that whenever he typed on the keyboard, the image on the monitor was shaking. All sorts of monitor problems ran through my mind. I asked him if it was only when he typed and he replied yes. Well, since it was a contract, I figured we'd better go see what was happening. My tech called me about ten minutes after arriving and reported that the problem was not the computer, but his desk . The desk vibrated every time he typed on his keyboard. I am still shaking my head on this one. The sad thing is that this guy has "Dr." in front of his name and is a professor at a major college. For a computer programming class, I sat directly across from someone, and our computers were facing away from each other. A few minutes into the class, she got up to leave the room. I reached between our computers and switched the inputs for the keyboards. She came back and started typing and immediately got a distressed look on her face. She called the teacher over and explained that no matter what she typed, nothing would happen. The teacher tried everything. By this time I was hiding behind my monitor and quaking red-faced. I started to type, "Leave me alone!"

Although I had lessons in keyboarding a number of years ago, it isn't as if I sat down in a typing class every day and just learned to type. Yet these days, I have to admit that I am thankful for my keyboarding lessons. Had it not been for the fundamentals that I learned, such as finger positioning and the "proper" movement to strike certain keys, I assure you that my time spent at a keyboard would have been far more frustrating. I do not claim to be some sort of master typist, and I would note that all of us are always working to improve our skill level. You obviously can't expect your fourth graders to suddenly start typing all of their homework before turning it in, but you can teach a building block that will help them master typing in the long run. The placement of one's fingers on the keyboard is key when learning how to type. While it will require lots and lots of practice before your students begin to feel that they're typing with any sort of speed, you can accomplish a lot prior to the practice that only a typewriter or computer and time can provide.

Guelph, Ontario, Canada N1G 2W1 Abstract
This paper reviews recent innovations in the following categories: increasing the degrees of freedom of a computer mouse for 3D interfaces, adding tactile feedback, and incorporating scrolling and zooming capabilities in a mouse. The results showed that it is possible to add new "tricks" to the mouse to substantially improve the ease and performance of interaction with computers.
1. Introduction: Computer Mouse – an "old" Technology
The computer mouse, together with bit-mapped video displays, served as a triggering technology for the point-and-click GUI (graphical user interface) revolution in the computer industry. Today, the mouse is the most frequently handled device in many people's daily lives: more frequent, perhaps, than cash, the steering wheel, door knobs, pens, hammers, or screw drivers. Not only is the term mouse accepted in reputable dictionaries (e.g., Concise Oxford Dictionary , 9th ed.), the verb variant, mousing, is also widely used as jargon.

Elementary Technology Keyboarding Skills for K- 5
The intent of a formal approach to teaching keyboarding is not to produce a skilled typist/but rather to help the student become more efficient in using the computer. It is designed to teach proper keyboarding techniques and familiarize the student with the location of various alphabetical characters/numbers and some computer function keys. Efficient keyboarding is essential for using word processing/database/desktop publishing/telecommunications/multi-media/and other applications. It is important that children learn proper manipulation of the keyboard to increase their proficiency and motivation in daily computer applications. Keyboarding is a crucial component of using computers as an integrated learning tool. Rationale: Students need instruction and practice in keyboarding to be more proficient users of technology. The K-5 Keyboarding Committee recommendations regarding keyboarding instruction for each student are as follows: A: Observing Teacher Modeling of Skills
B: Practicing Skills With Teacher Guidance
C: Utilizing Skills With Minimal Teacher Support
D: Applying Skills Independently
X: Not Covered Objectives: K Understand that the keyboard is a data input device.
