Keyboarding In Elementary Schools
by Heather Ross
Of the many topics debated today in Educational Technology, keyboarding has become a "biggie", especially in elementary schools. The toughest questions include when should students begin learning keyboarding and how should they be taught?
Years ago typing was taught as an optional high school course. Primarily students planning on entering business fields took this course so that they could type college papers. In addition, many of those not college bound, selected typing to become secretaries (now known as administrative assistants) and to work in offices. Since the boom of the computer age, it has become essential that all students learn to type. No longer are students learning to type in high school, but in middle school and even elementary school.
Today it is essential that students are comfortable using the computer and even keyboarding to be able to successfully live and learn in our society. Computers are becoming an integral part of many occupations that previously did not incorporate technology; even auto mechanics are using computers to monitor automobile performance.
When is the best time to begin learning to type?

The students would sit at their assigned computers. After making sure all students are seated, I would then explain to them that we would be making a house using our computers. They would already know how to use the keyboard and the mouse, so I would tell them to click on the Paint button (start the Microsoft Paint program that comes with Windows). After doing this, I would explain how to use each of the of the "paint parts." I would show them how to erase a mistake they might have made. I would also show them the different ways to use the spray paint, the different shapes, and how to choose different colors. After making sure they didn't have any questions, I would let them practice drawing for about two minutes. Once this was finished, they would then draw or "paint" their houses. This would probably take about 15-20 minutes, depending upon the child. During this part of the lesson, I would go around the room checking their progress, and answering any questions. After they were finished, I would let them print off their masterpiece, so that we could hang them in the hall.

Christopher Latham Sholes patented the typewriter that we commonly use today in 1868. The Remington Company mass-marketed the first typewriters starting in 1877. A few key technological developments created the transition of the typewriter into the computer keyboard. The teletype machine, introduced in the 1930s, combined the technology of the typewriter (used as an input and a printing device) with the telegraph. Elsewhere, punched card systems were combined with typewriters to create what was called keypunches. Keypunches were the basis of early adding machines and IBM was selling over one million dollars worth of adding machines in 1931. Early computer keyboards were first adapted from the punch card and teletype technologies. In 1946, the
