Amu's Bazaar proudly endorses Rising Mist Organics (click on pictures 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 to see full size. Click back to return) Earthworm Castings A s earthworms eat food scraps, manure, and other non-living substances, they excrete tiny pellets called castings. Plants love earthworm castings! Along with many other trace elements and micro-nutrients, castings have 5 - 11 times more nitrogen, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, potash, and magnesium than compost or topsoil. The minerals are water-soluble and time-released, so they are easily available to the plant when the plant needs them, both immediately and long-term. Unlike chemical fertilizers, castings are ALIVE with beneficial bacteria and other organisms that actually pull additional nutrients from the air. Gardeners love earthworm castings! Besides being a rich fertilizer, earthworm castings also balance the soil pH, help retain moisture, improve drainage, and aerate the soil through aggregate formation. Unlike chemical fertilizers, earthworm castings will not burn plants at any concentration. They provide strong beneficial control over plant pathogens, pests, and harmful root-eating nematodes. Being humus, castings have a rich earthy smell. There is no need to fear overuse or misuse. Use as little or as much as you like. No mixing, no measuring, and no odor! Simply add to the soil and water the plants. And there's more! Earthworm castings add beneficial bacteria and help your plants grow faster (independent studies by three universities). Your soil is healthier so your plants are healthier.

Introduction In nature, dead organic matter is attacked by soil microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, as well as invertebrates such as worms and insects, which use the material for energy and nutrients causing the matter to decompose into a nutrient rich soil supplement. Through composting, naturally occurring decay mechanisms are controlled and encouraged to break down organic matter into compost, a relatively stable organic product that improves soil structure, aeration, and water retention. This natural form of recycling is an inexpensive and ecologically sound waste management method capable of diverting tons of municipal solid waste from landfills. The Fundamentals A compost pile is a living community of organisms that require air, warmth, water, and a “balanced diet.” In order to sustain efficient decomposition

166. Home And Gardening, A Celebration Of The Home Arts.
Articles and ideas for garden preparation, container planting, composting, and overall design.
http://www.at-home-garden.com
A Celebration of the Home Arts At Home Garden is a directory of resources to help in the celebration of the home arts. Our main areas of focus are: home gardening, cooking, decorating, and seasonal themes. This month we’re highlighting Christmas and the holiday season and encouraging all of us to enjoy the season even more by practicing our favorite home arts. Next month we will look at what our homes say about us. Why is it that, even with our increasingly busy lives, we still make time for puttering in the garden or making bread from scratch? What kind of satisfaction is it that drives us to wax hardwood floors when we could be playing golf? What is it about colorful, coordinated fine cotton bedding that makes us feel so good about getting tired and crawling into bed? Essayist Erin O’Neil will present a humorous look at the demands we place on ourselves in our pursuit of the home arts. This web site is a volunteer effort and we welcome your contributions. Let us know what topics you’d like to see explored within this site and if you have articles to contribute, as well please send any comments and suggestions to:

How Composting Works
by Craig C. Freudenrich, Ph.D. Table of Contents Introduction to How Composting Works Composting Biology Making Compost Making a Compost Column Trash Audit Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Photo courtesy Karim Nice Home composting is an ideal way to reduce solid waste. Americans generate about 210 million tons (231 million short tons) of trash, or solid waste , each year. Most of this trash (57 percent) gets placed in municipal landfills . About 56 million tons (27 percent) is recovered through either recycling, in the case of glass, paper products, plastic or metals, or through composting, in the case of yard waste. Composting is a method for treating solid waste in which organic material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment. Composting is an essential part of reducing household wastes. It can be done inexpensively by every household and produces a product

Each year agricultural effluents, industrial residues, and industrial accidents contaminate surface waters, soils, air, streams, and reservoirs. A new compost technology, known as compost bioremediation, is currently being used to restore contaminated soils, manage stormwater, control odors, and degrade volatile organic compounds.

Compost technology is a valuable tool already being used to increase yields by farmers interested in sustainable agriculture. Now, professional growers are discovering that compost-enriched soil can also help suppress diseases and ward off pests. These beneficial uses of compost can help growers save money, reduce their use of pesticides, and conserve natural resources. In the poultry industry, composting has also become a cost-effective method of mortality management. It destroys disease organisms and creates a nutrient-rich product that can be used or sold.
