Composting
Composting turns household wastes into valuable fertilizer and soil organic matter.
In your backyard
All organic matter eventually decomposes. Composting speeds the process by providing an ideal environment for bacteria and other decomposing microorganisms. The final product, humus or compost, looks and feels like fertile garden soil. This dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling stuff works wonders on all kinds of soil and provides vital nutrients to help plants grow and look better. Decomposing organisms consist of bacteria, fungi, and larger organisms such as worms, sow bugs, nematodes, and numerous others. Decomposing organisms need four key elements to thrive: nitrogen, carbon, moisture, and oxygen. For best results, mix materials high in nitrogen (such as clover, fresh grass clippings, and livestock manure) and those high in carbon (such as dried leaves and twigs). If there is not a good supply of nitrogen-rich material, a handful of general lawn fertilizer will help the nitrogen-carbon ratio. Moisture is provided by rain, but you may need to water or cover the pile to keep it damp. Be careful not to saturate the pile. Turning or mixing the pile provides oxygen. Frequent turning yields faster decomposition.
Getting started
Many materials can be added to a compost pile, including leaves, grass clippings, straw, woody brush, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, livestock manure, sawdust, and shredded paper. Do not use diseased plants, meat scraps that may attract animals, and dog or cat manure which can carry disease. Composting can be as simple or as involved as you would like, and depends on how much yard waste you have, how fast you want results, and the effort you are willing to invest.

How Composting Works
by Craig C. Freudenrich, Ph.D. Table of Contents Introduction to How Composting Works Composting Biology Making Compost Making a Compost Column Trash Audit Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Photo courtesy Karim Nice Home composting is an ideal way to reduce solid waste. Americans generate about 210 million tons (231 million short tons) of trash, or solid waste , each year. Most of this trash (57 percent) gets placed in municipal landfills . About 56 million tons (27 percent) is recovered through either recycling, in the case of glass, paper products, plastic or metals, or through composting, in the case of yard waste. Composting is a method for treating solid waste in which organic material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment. Composting is an essential part of reducing household wastes. It can be done inexpensively by every household and produces a product

http://www.oikos.com/library/compostingtoilet/
What is a Composting Toilet System and How Does it Compost?
What is a Composting Toilet System?
Composting toilet systems (sometimes called biological toilets, dry toilets and waterless toilets) contain and control the composting of excrement, toilet paper, carbon additive, and, optionally, food wastes. Unlike a septic system a composting toilet system relies on unsaturated conditions (material cannot be fully immersed in water), where aerobic bacteria and fungi break down wastes, just as they do in a yard waste composter. Sized and operated properly, a composting toilet breaks down waste to 10 to 30 percent of its original volume. The resulting end-product is a stable soil-like material called "humus," which legally must be either buried or removed by a licensed seepage hauler in accordance with state and local regulations in the United States. In other countries, humus is used as a soil conditioner on edible crops. The primary objective of the composting toilet system is to contain, immobilize or destroy organisms that cause human disease (pathogens), thereby reducing the risk of human infection to acceptable levels without contaminating the immediate or distant environment and harming its inhabitants. This should be accomplished in a manner that
  • is consistent with good sanitation (minimizing both human contact with unprocessed excrement and exposure to disease vectors, such as flies).

DEFINITION:
A waterless composting toilet uses no water and produces a valuable fertilizer. There are some composting toilets that use a very small amount of water or foam. The water using kinds will typically be part of a total wastewater system.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Composting toilets are lawful in Austin provided the units are approved by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) or engineered by a registered Professional Engineer. Austin presently composts sewage waste derived from its central wastewater system. The composted product is marketed as a landscape fertilizer called Dillo Dirt. For this reason, it may be difficult to justify the extra expense and maintenance needs of a composting toilet in order to gain compost when a city sewer line is available. Additionally, the low volume of water required to be used by toilets in Austin (1.6 GPF) makes the water savings from using a waterless toilet quite low. If a home does not have central wastewater services, a composting toilet may be practical. Coupled with a sub-surface greywater irrigation system, the composting toilet can avoid the installation of a blackwater septic system. Although kitchen sink wastewater is defined as blackwater along with toilet wastewater, the Austin-Travis County Health Department may permit the discharge of kitchen wastewater with greywater in a sub-surface irrigating system if the site conditions are suitable.

Composting
Composting is the natural cycle of plants living, dying, and breaking down to pass their nutrients to other plants. Compost is a source of nutrients for plants. It helps to improve the texture and fertility of the soil. You learned about texture earlier in this case. Compost is made up of a lot of different things. Think of compost as the soil's diet. The diet should be balanced between materials that are high in nitrogen and those high in carbon, between wet and dry materials, and between acidic and basic materials. Microorganisms in the soil break down the organic matter to make compost.
The basic compost pile is made up of layers of organic matter, sprinkled with a little soil and fertilizer, kept moist and turned to keep oxygen going through it. You can speed up the process by making the size of the organic matter smaller and by turning the pile frequently. There are four basic ingredients in a compost pile:
  • Carbon (from organic matter like leaves) provides the food for microorganisms.

The One Tree Hill Allotment Society site is on a steep hillside not far from Honor Oak Station, it can be quite a job cultivating land like this, it is pure unadulterated London clay, albeit improved over the years by the addition of many tons of manure and leaf mould it remains a difficult soil to work. However it yields remarkably good crops in great abundance. Here at One Tree Hill we are interested in all the various aspects of food growing, it goes a lot further than just putting the seeds in and waiting for the crops to grow, observance of and repect of the cycles of nature are paramount to successful crop growing.
Particularly composting, natures way of completing the circle.

http://www.composters.com/docs/tips.html
Tips on Composting WHY COMPOST AT ALL? Along with fuel efficiency, water conservation, and reduction in meat consumption, home composting is one of the most environmentally beneficial activities of modern society. Yard and food wastes make up approximately 30% of the waste stream in the US. Not only does composting sucessfully divert a significant portion of your family's waste stream from the landfill and water treatment facilities, it is a natural method of recycling organic materals into valuable humus. Finished compost is nutritious enough to use as a soil amendment, buffering the pH and helping to retain water in the soil. It can cool the soil's surface, and help mitigate erosion. Why buy topsoil when you create your own endless supply? Home composting also serves as an invaluable educational tool, teaching youngsters about conservation, the cycle of life, and inter-connectedness of the natural world. If it gets your child thinking about science or biology, or voluntarily participating in gardening and yard work, isn't it well worth the effort? HOW TO COMPOST Like death and taxes, composting happens - whether we want it to or not. Though all organic matter will eventually decompose (despite neglect), the trick is to get your pile to decompose as fast as you can fill it. The rate at which breakdown occurs depends on several factors: oxygenation, temperature, water content, particulate surface area, and the carbon:nitrogen ratio (see chart below). Like painting, composting is more art than a rigid science, and can at times require a bit of finesse and skill. However, with patience and a little practice, you can have ready-to-use humus for your garden in 6-8 weeks.
