References To design a sustainable agricultural sector, the outputs from each production enterprise must become inputs to other enterprises just as in nature. Everything in the natural system is food to something else. We have not yet succeeded in mimicking this efficiency in our agricultural system. Many organic byproducts of agricultural production and processing are currently seen as "wastes" and thus become potential environmental hazards. Likewise, leaves, lawn clippings and restaurant food wastes have become problematical because their bulk fills limited landfill sites quickly. In some instances where the "output-becoming-input" model has been tried, we may have created other dangers. Currently wastes from poultry confinement systems are fed to other types of livestock although there is some public concern about this practice.

Welcome To The Crazy For Composting Web Quest
You and your fifth grade classmates have a big job to do! The new incoming fifth graders have absolutely no idea about vermi-composting in Room 109....yet! It will be your job to help them understand how and why we compost in 5th grade.
Task
Working with your computer partner, you will search several worm web sites, read composting books, and answer specific questions to create your own section to our homemade classroom book entitled "Vermi-composting...If A 10 Year Old Can Do It So Can You!" This book will be presented as an introduction to the incoming 5th graders.
Questions To Ponder
One of the following four questions will be assigned to you and your computer partner to search and generate a hard copy for our classroom book. 1.) What is composting? How does it take place? What kinds of materials can and can not be composted? 2.) Why compost? What difference can composting make in a classroom or even in a whole school? Are there different ways to compost? 3.) How do you go about setting up an indoor worm bin? What materials are needed? Can anyone do it?

Instead, you can practice the 3 Rs of waste management - Reduce the amount of yard waste you create through "grasscycling" - leave grass clippings on your yard. Reuse yard waste by mulching with leaves. Chip woody materials to use an ornamental mulch or to control weeds. Composting With Worms
Vermicomposting, or worm composting, is the decomposing of organic waste with red worms. It is a very convenient way of composting for apartment dwellers, school staff and students, persons with disabilities, office workers, elderly persons and anyone else who would have difficulty maintaining an outdoor compost pile. Vermicomposting creates a fine black granular compost called "castings". Worm castings are an excellent source of slow-release soil nutrients for your plants or lawn. They also act as an excellent soil additive that prevents the caking of soil in potted plants. Creating a Home for Your Worms Bedding - Red worms can live in bins made from plastic or wood. These containers are partially filled with bedding material, most commonly peat moss, shredded newspaper, shredded cardboard, straw or a combination of these materials. Moisture - The worm bedding should be kept as moist as a well-wrung sponge. Occasionally, the bedding can become too wet and needs to be gently loosened with a hand cultivator or small garden fork.

Composting Dead Poultry
Author: Eldridge R. Collins, Jr., Extension Agricultural Engineer Publication Number 442-037, November 1996
Introduction
Principles of Composting Poultry Composter Design Key Construction Features ... Summary
Introduction
An acceptable system of disposal for dead birds is essential to any well run poultry farm operation. Moreover, Virginia law requires that poultry producers have an approved means for disposing of dead birds. There are generally two categories of disposal problems: (1) Normal mortality, which is typically about 0.1 percent per day, but fluctuations up to 0.25 percent per day are not uncommon, and (2) Whole flock disposal. Research at the University of Maryland, and field application in other poultry states, have shown that normal mortality can be handled efficiently and safely by composting dead poultry. Composting is a natural process in which beneficial organismsbacteria and fungireduce and transform organic wastes into a useful end productcompostwhich can be used as a fertilizer and soil amendment. Although simple in concept and design, dead poultry composters require attention to detail and careful management. Effective July 1, 1992 properly constructed and properly managed dead bird composters are an acceptable method of handling normal flock mortality in Virginia. Composting is not recommended for whole flock disposal cases. Such cases require special permission and supervision from the Virginia State Veterinarian's Office.

There are many things we can do in our yard to help reduce the use of chemicals and pesticides and still maintain a beautiful lawn or garden. Using good maintenance practices like watering weekly (rather than more often), using a mulching mower or using compost on the lawn in place of chemical fertilizer are all ways of caring for our lawn with nature in mind.
Yard trimmings
We can help our lawns thrive by leaving grass clippings on them after cutting. Grass clippings provide essential nutrients, add valuable organic material and reduce evaporation and the need to water. Grass clippings can supply 25 per cent of your lawn's nitrogen needs.
Backyard composting
Studies show that more than 40 per cent of what we send to the landfill is organic waste. Much of this can be composted, taking up less space in landfills, helping improve regional air quality and producing excellent soil conditioner.

Worms for Home Composting
The complete, environmentally friendly system that quickly and easily converts all your kitchen waste into top quality compost and liquid fertilizer. These days more and more people are becoming aware of the need to reduce the amount of waste we are sending to our already overstretched landfill sites. With a worm composting system you can do your bit to help, and also have your own supply of top quality compost into the bargain. This is a system that has been very popular in the USA and other countries for many years, but is only now beginning to catch on here in th UK. So, as a worm farmer myself, I thought I'd like to put together some information about composting with worms, or vermiculture, as it's sometimes known, that hopefully some of you will find interesting and maybe get you onto the road to composting for yourself.
