Introduction to Composting
Backyard composting is the most economical way to reduce organic materials going into the landfill while preserving natural resources. Anything growing in your yard is potential compost material. Compost is nature's way of recycling by returning vital nutrients to the soil. Compost is the end product of decomposed organic material like food scraps, grass clippings, leaves, and wood and brush chips. The key to a healthy compost pile is to keep it simple. Reduce - Landscape trimmings can be reduced through simple changes in maintenance procedures. The "Don't Bag It" program, for instance, promotes leaving grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. This helps fertilize your lawn and reduces waste. Major changes, like choosing native or well-adapted plants, can also reduce waste. Reuse - Yard trimmings and food scraps can be composted at home for reuse in landscapes and gardens. Many yard trimmings can be used as mulch to protect the soil, suppress weeds and conserve water. Recycling - Yard trimmings that are difficult to manage at home are collected at the curbside and taken to the City of Austin Hornsby Bend Facility to be composted and processed with sewage sludge to make Dillo Dirt , a popular fertilizer for lawns and gardens.

Devon Community Composting Network.
Welcome to the Devon Community Composting Network Web site. Devon has more Community Composting projects than any other County. This is due in great part to a unique partnership between the District Councils and the County Council. Moneys raised from the recycling banks in the County go towards community recycling and composting projects and other recycling initiatives. Devon supports Community Composting. The first group was set up in 1992, officially launched in March 1993. We now have 20 groups operating with more on the horizon. Recycling credits are paid for finished compost, a 25 kilo sack is deemed to be equivalent to 40 kilos of the raw material, before it was composted. Thus twenty five 25 kilo sacks equals one tonne (25 times 40 = 1,000 kilos = One tonne). The amount actually paid varies from district to district but helps to core fund' each project. This way instead of relyiong on voluntary input forever the schemes can pay volunteers to do the work, or the money can be spent on improvements etc. Our own project in Chagford has now developed into a Community Business. One of our members makes hand powered rotary sieves which can process reasonably large amounts of compost. They cost £300 plus vat, please

Home Composting
Composting , nature's own way of recycling, is the controlled decomposition of organic material such as leaves, twigs, grass clippings, and vegetable food waste. Compost is the soil amendment product that results from proper composting. Whether it's done on site, at the point of waste generation or in a large-scale, centralized facility, composting helps to keep the high volume of organic material out of landfills and turns it into a useful product. On-site composting reduces the cost of hauling materials and is generally exempted from solid waste regulations. Large scale facilities can handle more material and potentially produce a more consistent product, but may be faced with regulatory issues. Looking for an expert in your area? Welcome. We invite you to explore the environmentally-friendly world of composting, by browsing through "Backyard Magic". This is one in a series of environmental education publications produced by the New Brunswick Department of the Environment and Local Government. As you continue through the text, you will see some of the visual material is based on video images, while others are line drawings. The line drawings were scanned from the printed booklet version of "Backyard Magic". The colour pictures were adapted from our companion video, "Backyard Magic: The ABC's of Composting". For information on how you can turn your household's organic waste into a valuable soil conditioner, consult our table of contents below. "Rehabilitate Your Soil by Regenerating Vital Minerals and Nutrients"
Mother earth is already on the slippery slope to ecological disaster. With the depletion of vital nutrients in our soil level and the over production of crops, the ability of the soil to regenerate and heal itself lessens each year. Unless we put back in to the earth what we have taken out, the soil will degenerate more each year and our food supply becomes less nutritious. We need to get back to basics and help rebuild the soil. We can't just think about it any longer, we must act now!
What are we doing wrong? On a grand scale, in order to meet the high demand for a variety of foods, the same crops are planted in the same fields year after year after year. Crops should be rotated. On a personal level, with our busy lives we have eliminated a very basic but necessary step. We throw our vegetable and fruit peelings and other food waste away instead of recycling, composting or vermicomposting it. When we throw food waste down the garbage disposal or send it to a landfill, it disrupt nature's life cycle process of things being born, living, dying and being reborn again. When we bypass this natural life cycle recycling process, we deplete nutrients from the soil and deprive nature of the ability to regenerate and rehabilitate itself.

The TMECC Project TMECC provides detailed protocols for the composting industry to verify the physical, chemical, and biological condition of composting feedstocks, material in process and compost products at the point of sale. Material testing is needed to verify product safety and market claims. TMECC provides protocols to sample, monitor, and analyze materials at all stages of the composting process, i.e., prior to, during and after composting to help maintain process control, verify product attributes, assure worker safety, and to avoid degradation of the environment in and around the composting facility.
Standardized methods for testing and evaluating compost quality are needed by compost producers, state regulatory and permitting agencies, compost product marketing specialists, state and commercial testing laboratories, and agriculturalists, horticulturalists, landscapers, and other consumer sectors. Compost and compost blends are subject to extensive interstate transit and use on public and private lands. Compost is produced from a variety of feedstocks and thus provides for beneficial use of a variety of by-products:
    • Food Processing Residuals —compostable material remaining after fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, and meat are processed for consumption.
