New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians . 2d ed. 2000
Though this work is called a dictionary, it is actually the most comprehensive music encyclopedia in English. With over 20,000 biographical entries, most of which include bibliographies, it is a good starting point for finding information on composers. Use the Article Search feature to retrieve articles on individual composers, or browse the A-Z article list.

For general works, see ML160; for period studies, see ML193 (17th-20th centuries), ML194 (17th century), ML195 (18th), ML196 (19th), and ML197 (20th). A list of some specific starting points follows. Years ago, my Jr. High general music teacher used a fill-in-the-blank approach weekly, using different composers. Years later, taking over that position, I found the book from which he had copied the text, making up his worksheets we studied, and later filling in the blanks. I am saying this, as I believe using basic reference materials on composers, you could probably make up your own materials to use in the classroom—or that you could put up on a teacher-created website for your students if they are to work on line. You might be able to use your work on creating a website as something your school would give you credit for in terms of professional development, and which might evntually be linkied to one of the math-reading sites. As well, should you be taking graduate coursework, see if this could be one of the projects in such work. (I love to "kill several birds" with the same stone for practicing educators.) So my idea is to make your own that will fit the needs of you students. I am also hopful that someone out there will send in an exact site you have in mind to get you started. Also, you might post your query on several general-music-specific sites which will yield some results, probably, as we all get back to school. Ed

Music Time Periods Which time period should be featured in "The Museum of Music History"? Introduction Task Process Resources ... Conclusion Introduction
The Society of Western Music has established "The Museum of Music History". They are looking for a time period to be featured as the opening exhibit. Each of the historic time periods offers much for the museum, but a committee of specialists in each time period is trying to get theirs featured. These specialists will use facts about composers in their time and the significance of the changes in music to prove that their time period is the most important of all. Task
Students will be grouped into committees of 3 members. Each of the 3 members will have a specific aspect to research pertaining to your time period. After researching your given time period you will organize your ideas into a presentation so that you can persuade the museum curator to choose your time period for the opening exhibit. The final presentation may be in the form of a skit, a puppet show, a TimeLiner presentation, or a PowerPoint presentation. Remember, you must have a legitimate argument by showing the importance of music in your time period, and how it affects modern life as we know it.
Process
1. Students will be divided into committee groups of 3. Each student then will be assigned to a specific aspect of your time period to study. Those aspects are: composers, instruments, and non-musical significant items.

And no book on Beethoven symphonies can tell you as much as you can absorb by playing four-hand versions of them with your favorite partner."
Leonard Bernstein, The Infinite Variety of Music And yet, the vast majority of people who might want to explore the world of classical music have no such recourse, because such musical fluency has never really been either encouraged or developed (Bernstein does admit this). For the person newly initiated into classical music, the person hoping to make some sense of a forest of Italian and German words and find their way through an ocean of composers and performers and orchestras and conductors, books are precisely where they are going to turn. And they're going to be confronted, again, by all manner of volumes about music: composer biographies, academic studies, books about esoteric terms like "counterpoint" and "orchestration," books about operas alone and books about symphonies alone. Books and books and books, about music and music and music. Where on earth to start?

http://www.music-research-inst.org/html/main/im_definition.htm
What is Intercultural Music? What is intercultural music and who are its practitioners? Excerpt from the "Introduction" to Intercultural Music Volume 1 ed. by Cynthia Tse Kimberlin and Akin Euba. 1995:2-5 In some instances, intercultural activity takes place even though both composer and all elements featured in his or her work are derived from the same culture. The music of Bartok, in which elements of Hungarian folk music are employed, comes under this category. In Europe, folk culture has become a 'foreign' or archaic entity and there is a good argument for treating the folk and art music cultures of a given European society as two separate entities. Furthermore, the act of extracting folk elements from their local ethnic or social context and placing them in an international context where they have relevance for people outside the indigenous society is a fundamental aspect of interculturalism. Intercultural activity does not always imply creativity but can be determined by performance. In this case, the music and the performer originate from different cultures. The mastery of Western music by Asian artists (and vice versa) is an example of this category. The flowering of brilliant executants of Western art music from Japan, India, Korea and other parts of Asia in recent decades demonstrates one of the most important principles of musical interculturalism, namely, that talent is congenital while idiom is learnt. In spite of achievements of Asian artists in Western art music, there are those (even among scholars) who continue to maintain musical expertise is bound by indigenous cultural norms. Such persons assert, for examples, that Africans could never master Western techniques and should confine themselves to African traditional music! In combating such narrow-mindedness, Blacking suggested (with reference to arts education in the United Kingdom, one of the most intercultural of contemporary societies) that "it is necessary for children to hear a piano recital by a Jamaican or an Indian and a sitar recital by an English person, if only to demonstrate the individuality and transcendental universality of the arts."

These are a few biographical sketches, comments on recordings, and other general ramblings about Western art music that I wrote for the classical music newsgroup and the All-Music Guide Sometimes, I still get requests for some of these, so I'm posting the ones I like on this page. Keep in mind, though, that this stuff is out of date (circa 1996), not always factually correct, half of it's been unconsciously plagiarized from other sources, and of course it's my opinion. You may not agree, you may not ultimately share it, but that's the risk you take when you read all that free stuff on the web. So you've been warned.

Chosen from among eight finalists in one of this country's most coveted opportunities for emerging composers, Mr. Romero won the top prize at ACO's annual Whitaker New Music Reading Sessions with his work, Merengue . Mr. Romero's work impressed ACO's judges as "lively, rhythmic, and punchy," with a "personal voice" that is "quirky and decidedly effective." Merengue is an orchestral tour-de-force with "original Latin rhythmic material that is developed very well." Last year's Whitaker winner, Lisa Bielawa, is currently working The Right Weather for ACO, scheduled to premiere at ACO inaugural performance at the newly constructed Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on February 27, 2004. Previous Whitaker-commissioned composer Paul Yeon Lee's Ballade No. 1 is tentatively scheduled for premiere during ACO's 2004-2005 Carnegie Hall season.

Thus you'll have the maximum flexibility to tailor your degree to suit your interests and career plans. About half your courses will be in music; the other half will be a combination of liberal arts study and courses in your chosen outside field
    Degree Requirements
Specific requirements for the degree program are found in the Ithaca College undergraduate catalog.
    Bachelor of Music in Composition
The composition program features guest composers and a state-of-the-art electronic and computer studio. In addition, the contemporary chamber ensemble performs student works, and student composers study and work with a distinguished composer in residence as part of the Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition series. Guest composers such as John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, Joan Tower, and John Harbison present master classes, critique student work, and give lectures on their own works, and music school ensembles perform the visiting composers' works. The broad-based and practical approach of the composition program affords you the opportunity to study with some of the country's leading composers, to hear your own music performed by skilled musicians and ensembles, and to enrich your traditional composition study with writing experiences in popular American styles and commercial media.

Related Research On Writing in Music (for use in syllabi) Writing about music often requires the writer to translate ideas about what is heard (sound) into an entirely different medium (prose). This translation process integrates two different systems of notation (musical notes and written language) in order to communicate about ideas that exist in sound and time. Writers in the field of music also respond to musical works, analyze compositions and techniques, profile work of specific composers, write grants for support of their work, review others' compositions and productions, and promote musical events. The branch of this field called "musicology," not unlike the discipline of history, depends upon written reasoning to account for historical and cultural contexts for music. Many musicians, composers, and professors of music report that they spend as much time writing as they do composing or performing.
