Wave of the Future
The story of the next generation in sound technology By Bob Johnstone In 1963 Max Mathews, then a researcher at the Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, published a paper in which he predicted that the computer would become the ultimate musical instrument. "There are no theoretical limits," Mathews wrote, "to the performance of the computer as a source of musical sounds." Thirty years later, you can find the father of computer music at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (abbreviated CCRMA, but pronounced - because this is, after all, California - "Karma"). There, in the Knoll, a 1916 Spanish Gothic edifice that was once the president's residence, with a panoramic view over Silicon Valley, a bunch of young graduate students - engineers, programmers, and roboticists, all of them also accomplished musicians - are building the ultimate musical instrument. Fashioned from software, silicon, solenoids and speakers, this virtual masterpiece will be able to replicate not just the sound, but also the feel of every piano, organ, harpsichord, and keyboard instrument that has ever existed (see "The Ultimate Keyboard," page 60). Of interest only to scholars and performers? Maybe so, but Karma's work has a way of resonating far beyond Stanford's Hoover Tower. The center's researchers have already played a key role in the ongoing metamorphosis of the personal computer from dumb terminal into multimedia machine. From New Jersey to California to Japan to Singapore and back again: for the sound of silicon, what a long, strange trip it has been. A trip that involves Phil Lesh of The Grateful Dead, if only in a walk-on part. As Karma technical director Chris Chafe cheerfully acknowledges, "It's all been totally unexpected."

I have played Edwards Gen II trumpets (Bb, C, E/Eb/D) and Gen X trumpets (Bb and C) for more than three years and I have had direct input to their design for the past five years. I have been an Edwards Performing Artist for three years, having been a clinician for Bach for 12 years previously and Yamaha before that. I enjoy playing my Edwards trumpets. I receive many compliments from other professional players on my sound and artistry as much or more so than before I switched to Edwards. I feel my accuracy and consistency are much improved with enhanced sound quality and good intonation. Other Edwards players report that they perceive similar results on Edwards trumpets. More...

MUSICAL TRAINING IMPROVES MEMORY By Dwayne Hunter, Betterhumans Staff, July 29, 2003 Children who have musical training also have significantly better verbal memory than children who don't, and the difference increases the longer they study. The finding was made by psychologists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and reported in the July issue of the Journal of Neuropsychology. Researchers Anges Chan, Yim-Chi Ho and Mei-Chun Cheung propose that music training during childhood contributes to the reorganization and increased development of the brain's left temporal lobes in musicians. They believe that this occurrence facilitates cognitive processing mediated by that specific brain area verbal memory.

An introduction to the importance of interdisciplinary study designed to assist undergraduate students in the establishment of goals for their own undergraduate education. Team-taught by UNC faculty from several disciplines. An exploration of how experts in various fields of knowledge define their objects of study, and how those experts employ different methods of investigation. Students investigate models of "teamwork" and project management, such as those represented in "concurrent engineering" and "total quality management". The Consortium of Vermont Composers was founded in 1988 to get new music out there from in here. About 250 composers live and work in Vermont, with music ranging from the straightforward song to the electronic edge. The Consortium publishes Consorting , a newsletter of musical ideas, jousts and confusion. Becoming a member of the Consortium means forking over a small bag o' coins contact the Consortium . Large sums of money, artistic contributions, lip-slathering commissions and general bewilderment are also welcome. The Consortium of Vermont Composers can be reached for recordings, Midi and .wav files, CDs, etc. The Consortium of Vermont Composers in undergoing a period of dormancy. At some point, the need for a strong composers organization in Vermont will return, but for now, it has fulfilled its mission to increase the awareness of Vermont composers among Vermont ensembles. In the meantime, the international but Vermont-based radio/cyber show and website invites composers everywhere to submit materials for broadcast and to join its hosts for interviews.
