Styles of Jazz: Ragtime
Popular Ragtime Artists and Composers
  • Scott Joplin (1868-1917), christened ``King of Ragtime Writers'' by John Stark.
  • James Scott (1885-1938), whose mirrored initials did not escape Scott Joplin.
  • Joseph Lamb (1887-1960), who would have been content with fame as a ragtime composer without being paid for his music.
Other important artists: Tom Turpin, Otis Saunders, Arthur Marshall, Louis Chauvin, Scott Hayden, John W. ``Blind'' Boone, S. Brunson Campbell, Artie Matthews, Robert Hampton, Charles Thompson, Eubie Blake, Luckey Roberts, Percy Wenrich, Charles L. Johnson, George Botsford, Henry Lodge, J. Russel Robinson. Of course, this is not a complete list. Most of the names near the front of the list were active in the Midwest. In fact, most of the people in the list were active in the Midwest. This is not a complete history. It is merely meant to whet your appetite and inspire you to further reading about and delightful listening to the exuberant music of ragtime. wolbert@math.uchicago.edu

tudents in the School's Studio Music and Jazz Instrumental Program study with some of the finest jazz instructors in higher education. Students develop their jazz and studio performance skills to a professional level with the goal of pursuing careers as jazz or studio musicians, composers, arrangers, conductors, or instrumentalists.
To prepare for their chosen career, jazz majors concentrate on tone development, musicianship, and technical mastery of their instrument. Courses stress development of style, improvisation, jazz composition, and arranging. Special sections of jazz theory and ear training are also offered.
Approximately three dozen studio music and jazz performing ensembles are available. Large and small jazz ensemble groups provide outstanding performance opportunities. Students also benefit from contact with the many national and international guest artists who perform and lecture on campus each year. Guest artist and faculty/student performances are scheduled for each Jazz Forum.
In addition to numerous on-campus performance opportunities, there exists in the Greater Miami metropolitan area unique international, multiethnic sites for work and study. Opportunities abound to gain professional experience in South Florida area jazz clubs, recording studios, Latin bands, cruise ships, theaters, and opera and symphony orchestras.

In his notes to Harmos , Guy admits that his early music, after Ode , became increasingly academic and this gradually alienated many musicians, while 'our then-conductor, Buxton Orr, held the ship together against increasingly difficult odds'. Some musicians just don't seem content to remain in one genre. This week's edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! features classical guitar music by 4 jazz composers. Three of the compositions are original works for guitar, and three of the works were written by pianist composers. The program begins with the first movement, "Hispanic Dance" of Claude Bolling's "Concerto for Classic Guitar and Jazz Piano Trio". Guitarist John McLaughlin is known as a jazz guitar super-virtuoso, but he's also composed in numerous styles from classical, to Indian, to electronic music. He performs his "Mediterranean Concerto" with the London Symphone Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Manuel Barrueco performs a guitar arrangement of Keith Jarrett's piano improvisation, "Koln Concert PtIIc". The program concludes with another work by a pianist composer, Paul Hart's "Duet for Two", with guitarist Joyhn Williams.

  • Students use " A Jazz Starter Kit " as a starting point for research and exploration of a particular jazz period, style, composer, or performer. Students then create a presentation or multi-media report that summarizes this research, including musical clips representative of the period, style, composer, or performer studied. Teachers use "A Jazz Starter Kit" as a framework to create a unit on jazz and its various eras and traditions.
