It is in no way complete, as there are many outstanding books on them collectively and individually. It is only meant to provide a little more insight for the ragtime novice, or perhaps a quick reference for those well versed in the art. Except where noted, the compositions listed for each composer encompass only instrumentals, as many wrote songs as well. The dates listed are either known dates of composition or publication, except where noted. For further information I will suggest certain reference sources, and for an overall view of good references currently available or tucked away in your local library, please check out my Ragtime Books and Ragtime Music Collections pages. In our day and age it is rare that any single "classical music" concert event can find itself caught in the web of a contemporary cultural and political crisis. We have come to regard concert life and the music of the concert hall as essentially matters of entertainment and aesthetic taste, entirely divorced from the nasty world of politics and social conflict. Even though there are some who welcome this sort of distance in terms of history, this has not always been the case. Musical life has been a significant part of political life. Chopin, Verdi, and Wagner are perhaps the most obvious examples of composers who regarded their work as vital to a community defined precisely in terms of its politics. This concert was planned in the knowledge that over the past quarter-century a painful strain in the relations between Jewish Americans and African Americans has developed. However, the extent of the hate and deception exhibited in recent months was not anticipated. It is hoped that this concert can contribute to the current political debate by presenting a moment of history when matters were different. Not nostalgia, but rather the exploration of different models from which to draw inspiration for the present and future is at issue here.

From Scene to Shining Screen: A Short History of Film Music
by Paul Chihara Movie music was not born in the movie theaters but in the worlds of opera, musical theater, and vaudeville. Concert music too, particularly the romantic and melodramatic scores of the late nineteenth century, so popular in the early twentieth, provided a large and immediately available library of recognizable and memorable material suitable for film underscoring. Mendelssohn's Fingel's Cave Overture , Wagner's Ride of the Walkurie , Lizst's Les Preludes , Rossini's William Tell Overture , just to mention some very obvious examples of dramatic and descriptive music, were ideal for movie music. When D.W. Griffeth produced his silent Birth of a Nation (1915), he provided a large orchestral score stitched together from classical and popular sources.

Soundcheck U.S. Jazz stamp Dutch Jazz Tuesday, November 18 at 2PM on 93.9 FM There is a long jazz tradition in the Netherlands, from post-bop styles to a thriving avant-garde scene that developed in the 1960s. American jazz musicians have sometimes criticized Dutch jazz, arguing that it doesn’t swing, or that it isn’t sufficiently rooted in the blues. But with its philosophical roots in absurdism and slapstick, it’s one of the few places where one can find humor in an otherwise serious art form. Why is Dutch jazz so robust and widespread? Many point to the country’s unique subsidy system, run by the government for the past two decades, which helps organize funding for improvised music. But as subsidies are being cut the landscape may now be changing. We get a history of Dutch jazz and learn how it relates to what else is happening today. We’re joined by Hans Mantel, an Amsterdam-based bassist, Radio Netherlands producer, and jazz authority.

Beginning Saturday, April 24th, at 11pm, then continuing every other week, the 2nd hour of the Sound of Jazz will feature a new series, titled "The Jazz Originals" - recordings of tunes written by jazz composers and musicians, expressly for jazz performance by both small groups and big bands. Such jazz classics as Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" and Miles Davis's "Four" will be presented by host Vic Hall, as a logical evolution of the popular "Great Standards". That series featured jazz adaptations of the "Great American Songbook" songs of Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen and the many other composers of popular songs of the 30's and 40's. Join Vic Hall every other Saturday at 10pm for The Sound of Jazz, following Marian McPartland's long-running Piano Jazz!

Album Liner Notes (excerpt): Surprises abound on this recording. Most surprising is a recent discovered song written by Louis Armstrong but never recorded until now. It has been waiting around for over seventy years and we now have available this early creative effort by the greatest of all jazz performers. In the same vien, this session marks the first commercial recording of "Klondyke Blues" by Yellow Nunez. (It was previously recorded by the Louisiana Five in 1919, but the record company chose not to release it.) The Other composers herein represented were all involved in the early history of jazz in New Orleans. They played with and heard all the original legends (for which they also qualified) of this American musical style.

Moscow to host national jazz festival soon
The Moscow-based house of composers is to host the first-ever national jazz festival called "All Jazz Stars" March 26-28, the festival's art director and famous Russian jazz musician Anatoly Kroll told RIA Novosti here today.
Moscow now hosts one-time jazz festivals involving foreign performers, in the first place, Kroll said. This is very good; meanwhile we would also like to acquaint jazz fans with our top-notch jazz musicians and composers, Kroll stressed.
Kroll, who heads the creative jazz commission of the Union of Composers after the death of composer Yury Saulsky, said that he tried hard to implement Saulsky's ideas; for instance, Saulsky wanted jazz to become more popular with the masses.
According to the festival's director, this event will involve about 15 orchestras, ensembles and solo players, including Oleg Lundstrem's jazz orchestra, Igor Butman's big jazz band, as well as the young Academic Band.
The organizers of the festival are the Union of Moscow Composers, Anatoly Kroll's Centre of Jazz Music and the House of Composers.

By the late 19th century, what had started as the call-and-response songs of the African slave population had turned into blues. The style progressed further in the early part of the 20th century, giving us Ragtime and Dixieland, before making its way up the Mississippi from New Orleans to Chicago. There, Big Band and Swing took hold in the '30s and '40s, taking jazz's complexity and maturity to new heights and extending its popularity beyond its original predominantly African-American audiences. Soon bebop emerged, championed by one of jazz's most renowned geniuses, saxophonist Charlie Parker , signalling the genre's coming of age as more than just a regional folk music. In the late '40s and '50s, Miles Davis and others took jazz further with modal and "cool" jazz, inspiring players like
