Scotland's jazz stars reopen Strathclyde's Crawfurd Theatre
Launch of the Scottish Composers Jazz Ensemble Thursday 30 October 2003, 7.30pm, Free admission Crawfurd Complex, Jordanhill Campus
27th October 2003 The University of Strathclyde will celebrate the reopening of its refurbished Crawfurd Theatre with a free concert by the newly formed Scottish Composers Jazz Ensemble (SCJE), a professional ensemble comprising some of Scotland's best jazz musicians and composers. The Crawfurd Complex was recently refurbished by the University at a cost of over £2 million. The former Crawfurd Theatre has been converted into a state-of-the-art teaching, learning and performance facility for University and community use.
Marion Sheridan, Crawfurd manager and Department of Applied Arts Lecturer said: "The reopening of the Crawfurd Theatre is great news for the local community. The theatre was traditionally famous for staging 'The Shakespeare', an annual production which eventually articulated with whichever Shakespeare play was in the Higher syllabus at the time. It was always very well attended.
"The Crawfurd Complex is already proving to be very popular as a teaching and learning facility and we are sure that the launch of the Scottish Composers Jazz Ensemble will re-establish it as a popular arts space. We've already had several approaches from past community users. Between them and our own music, dance and performance students, the Crawfurd should soon have a varied music, drama and dance programme on offer.

3. Jazz Composers
Jazz Composers. A good jazz composition should imply more than it says. Everyone s short list of top jazz composers should begin with Duke Ellington.
http://www.wright.edu/~martin.maner/comp01.htm
Jazz Composers When you think about it, jazz composition is an incredibly difficult art. A great jazz composer must create a piece of music that is interesting as written , but also interesting as a framework for what is not written . A good jazz composition should imply more than it says Everyone's short list of top jazz composers should begin with Duke Ellington. My personal short list would then include Thelonious Monk, Gil Evans, Horace Silver, and Wayne Shorter. And of course many of the Tin Pan Alley composers wrote tunes that generations of jazz musicians have cherished as frameworks for improvisation. I hope to post some more tributes to jazz composers in the future, but I'm going to start with three personal favorites that deserve more recognition: Billy Strayhorn, who was in many ways eclipsed by his mentor and collaborator, Duke Ellington; Jelly Roll Morton, well recognized in his day but not well known to today's young jazz listeners, and Hank Mobley, who is still better known as a tenor sax player than as a composer, though his jazz compositions are wonderful. Wrote Mozart regard to his Fugue K394b : "[...] This fugue has been created expressly for my own Constance. For she will listen to nothing except fugues, particularly fugues by Händel and Bach, and upon hearing me play them, often by heart, she would ask me whether I had never written one; when I answered no, she would reproach me for not wishing to compose the most artistic and the loveliest thing that music had to offer, and never stopped asking me to compose one for her In time and if the right opportunity arises, I shall write five more and give them to Baron van Sviten

The BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, now in its second decade, was formed to provide an environment where the composer has the freedom to explore new avenues in the creative process, while at the same time honing and solidifying his or her skills. The workshop is led by acclaimed composers/educators who act as its musical directors: Jim McNeely and Michael Abene. They understand the current state of jazz composition and have a strong sense of what can be accomplished through such an undertaking. The workshop was founded by acclaimed trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, composer/educator Manny Albam and author and jazz authority Burt Korall. The workshop faculty and guest lecturers are a very specific breed. They began and have roots “in the street,” where much memorable jazz to comes to life and takes on a particular sense of identity. The BMI Jazz Composers Workshop stresses exploration, ranging from the traditional to the new. The primary emphasis is placed on the individual and ideas, along with the acquisition and understanding of techniques that make possible for the composer the execution of thoughts and the development of personal language within the big band setting. Experimentation with form, harmony and orchestration, the solving of performance problems and the need to produce lasting, excellent work are also concerns of the workshop directors.
