Llama and Ratite Llama
  • Llamas can be bred at any time of the year. A single baby ("cria") is usually delivered from a standing mother, normally without assistance. Most births occur during daylight hours.
  • Llamas are modified ruminants with a three-compartment stomach. Like cattle and sheep, they chew their cud. Because of a relatively low protein requirement and an efficient digestive system, they can be kept on a variety of suitable pastures or hay, with the supplementation of recommended vitamins, minerals and salt. A llama costs significantly less to feed than other comparable-sized animals.
  • Llamas will spit at other llamas in order to establish the pecking order within the group; to ward off an unwanted suitor; or to say "Stop it!" A llama that has been mishandled, feels abused or threatened may occasionally spit at humans.
Ratite
  • Egg incubation time:
    • Ostrich - 42 days
    • Emu - 49 days
    • Rhea - 38 days
  • Good sanitation is an absolute must for successful rearing of young birds. Use a disinfectant in incubators, feeders, waterers and pens to reduce problems.

RABIES REVACCINATION
FOR COMPANION ANIMALS: CANADIAN DATA
by Nigel Gumley DVM
Introduction
Although prior to 1945, dogs accounted for the majority of the cases of rabies in Canada, vaccination, animal control, and regulatory measures have reduced the incidence of rabies in dogs. Vaccines for dogs are currently available with one, two and three year label recommendations, while cats have one and three year rabies vaccines available. Despite the availability of vaccines providing longer term duration of immunity, many veterinarians in Canada continue to use the rabies vaccine on an annual basis, even when using triennial products. In some cases, there appears to be significant confusion as to regulatory requirements; in others, there may be a lack of confidence in triennial products being used according to label recommendations.
Vaccine Use Across Canada
-The Provinces Although the City of Halifax, with 35% of the population of Nova Scotia, previously requested annual revaccination in order for pet owners to receive a discount on pet licenses, the majority of practitioners in the province revaccinate triennially against rabies. Pets that are travelling may receive annual revaccination if proceeding to areas where vaccination against rabies is required annually by law.

Companion Animals Other Britain is known as a "nation of animal lovers", but the truth is a different story. It's true that many people in Britain like animals, but most people don't respect them, in fact, they just reat them like toys and that is the cause of a lot of unnescesary suffering and misery. Jess is a typical example, her owner got her as a cute puppy but got bored when she grew up and got pregnant. Jess was locked in a coal bunker for most of the day and finally abandoned. Jess was lucky to be rescued and now lives in a good home.

The Bible According to Noah: Theology as if Animals Mattered
Reverend Gary Kowalski
ISBN: 1930051328 The fate of the planet and its inhabitants depends largely on the relationship between our species and the nonhuman animals we share the Earth with. To date this “relationship” has been a one-sided, cruel affair with our species exploiting and enslaving nonhuman animals and destroying the natural world. Reverend Gary Kowalski knows that much needs to be done pertaining to the way that our species treats other sentient beings and the natural world. His book, The Bible According to Noah: Theology as if Animals Mattered , is a thought provoking, informative piece where he provides a different look at some of the Bible’s stories. As Reverend Kowalski points out in the Prologue, “This is a different kind of Bible, built according to the same principles that Noah may have used in constructing the ark. Unlike that antique life raft, this book is not made of gopherwood. But my intent is, like his, to include every species. For sacred scriptures are like a boat – a vessel designed to carry a culture’s accumulated wisdom across the sea of time, ferrying knowledge to coming generations of how we should live. And the knowledge we need most at this point in history is how to live in tune with the natural world, in harmony with the other creatures whose well-being is vital to our own survival.” Reverend Kowalski’s insightful and passionate words provide hope that our species will see the light and begin treating nonhuman animals with respect and start living in harmony with nature.
