The Research Alliance for Children with Special Needs (RACSN), based in London, Ontario, Canada, is a multidisciplinary partnership of community and university faculty researchers from the fields of education, health, mental health, rehabilitation sciences, and social sciences. Originally formed in January 2000 with funding from the Community-University Research Alliance program of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), RACSN was recently awarded a further two years of funding from SSHRC to work towards its mandate of " Enhancing the participation of children with special needs. Too many nonprofit projects are conceived of as permanent and monolithic, if they are seen as having a future beyond the next funding cycle, that is. Quantum communication moves into the unknown By David Deutsch and Artur Ekert Information is physical and any processing of information is always performed by physical means - an innocent-sounding statement, but its consequences are anything but trivial, In the last few years there has been an explosion of theoretical and experimental innovations which, their discoverers claim, are creating a fundamental new discipline: a distinctively quantum theory of information. Quantum physics allows the construction of qualitatively new types of logic gates, absolutely secure cryptosystems (systems that combine communications and cryptography), the cramming of two bits of information into one physical bit and, as has just been proposed, a sort of "teleportation", Here we describe the last two "miracles". Classical information theory agrees with everyday intuition: if you want to send a message using an object which can be put into one of N distinguishable states, the maximum number of different messages that you can send is N . For example, a single photon can have only two distinguishable polarisation states, say "left-handed" and "right-handed". So if you send a message by preparing the polarisation of a single photon and transmitting it, it is obvious that you can send no more than two distinguishable messages, i.e, one bit of information. 0bvious, but false.

What Does Research Say About Early Childhood Education? S. Bredekamp, R.A. Knuth, L.G. Kunesh, and D.D. Shulman NCREL, Oak Brook, 1992 Early Childhood Education (ECE) is the term frequently applied to the education of young children from birth through age 8. Although early childhood education has existed since the creation of kindergarten in the 1800s, the last decade has seen a tremendous amount of attention devoted to the subject of early education for young children. The focus of this program, therefore, is to address curriculum and assessment issues related to the education of young children and discuss ways schools can change to become ready for children. Information that follows has been excerpted from position statements and guidelines developed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education (NAECS/SDE) for appropriately educating young children, ages 3 through 8. The Need for Early Childhood Curriculum and Assessment Guidelines These reports reflect a growing consensus that the traditional scope and sequence approach to curriculum with its emphasis on drill and practice of isolated, academic skills does not reflect current knowledge of human learning and fails to produce students who possess the kind of higher-order thinking and problem-solving abilities that will be needed in the 21st century. Past success in improving basic skills in the "3 Rs" has not been matched by success in improving reading comprehension, writing fluency, or math problem-solving ability. In addition, it is evident that our schools are failing to produce future generations with even a working knowledge of the natural, physical, and social sciences, much less the kinds of minds that will create new knowledge in these areas. Computing Research Repository (CoRR) Computing research relies heavily on the rapid dissemination of results. As a result, the formal process of submitting papers to journals has been augmented by other, more rapid, dissemination methods. Originally these involved printed documents, such as technical reports and conference papers. Then researchers started taking advantage of the Internet, putting papers on ftp sites and later on various web sites. But these resources were fragmented. There was no single repository to which researchers from the whole field of computing could submit reports, no single place to search for research results, and no guarantee that information would be archived at the end of a research project. This changed in September 1998. Through a partnership of ACM , the arXiv.org e-print archive (originally at Los Alamos, now based at Cornell), and NCSTRL (Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library), an online Computing Research Repository (CoRR) has been established. The CoRR is available to all members of the community at no charge. We encourage you to use the service right away. It gains in value as more researchers use it.
