Conference on artistic, cultural and scientific aspects of experimental media spaces.
September 21-22, 2001
Sankt Augustin (Bonn, Germany)
Organiser: MARS-Exploratory Media Lab
Under the patronage of Edelgard Bulmahn, German Federal Minister for Education and Research
Living in Mixed Realities
What does it mean to live, play and work in a world shaped and perceived through digital media, networks and architectures of real and virtual space? How can the development of complex communication spaces, life environments and economic models be designed as an interplay of technological, social, and artistic forces, as Mixed Realities of Art, Science and Technology.
The design of a Mixed Reality Architecture, which connects processes in virtual space to the social environments and everyday cultural practice, poses challenges to technologists, scientists and artists alike. Basic design elements are networked structures, which allow new collaborative forms of work and Knowledge Discovery, human-oriented interaction and Awareness, media spaces, Room ware and advanced interfaces.
cast01 scientists will present innovative technologies, tools and research projects from the European Commission Information Society Technologies Programme (IST). Artists will show aesthetic concepts of digital culture and new interactive media formats.

ASSR is the network engine of the Arab Institute for Studies and Communication (AISC). Founded in 1998, by a group of senior Arab social scientists, AISC is dedicated to develop research organizations and assist researchers in the Arab world and beyond. This web site of ASSR provides a platform for the AISC's centers and pools resources designed to facilitate social science research in the region. Its virtual library serves as a gateway for Arab social scientists and for others studying the Arab world. The resources on ASSR are organized by country and by subject and by type of resources for each of the 22 Arab countries. ASSR country index offers quick overview of all the resources at the ASSR database, presented in both English and Arabic. ASSR also offers general resources: databases, encyclopedias, journals, libraries, maps, search engines, and Middle East studies centers, languages and associations of relevance to social science. ... • What is DTNRG?
The Delay-Tolerant Networking Research Group (DTNRG) is concerned with how to address the architectural and protocol design principles arising from the need to provide interoperable communications with and among extreme and performance-challenged environments where continuous end-to-end connectivity cannot be assumed. Examples of such environments include spacecraft, military/tactical, some forms of disaster response, underwater, and some forms of ad-hoc sensor/actuator networks. Recently (June, 2004), DARPA has announced that bidding is open to its Disruption Tolerant Networking program. Click here for more information regarding this (highly related) effort.

      Abstract
The study of social worlds built by people on computer networks challenges the classical dimensions of sociological research. CMC scholars are prompted to exploit the possibilities offered by new, powerful, and flexible analytic tools for inexpensively collecting, organizing, and exploring digital data. Such tools could be used within a Weberian perspective, to aid in systematic examination of logs and messages taken from the actual life of a virtual community. A proposal can then be made for a longitudinal strategy of research which systematically compares specific aspects of virtual communities over different periods of time and different socio-geographical contexts. The article summarizes a case study on an Italian computer conference, and concludes with a short outline of the new graphical CMC environments and their consequences for the rise of a multimedia cyber-anthropology.
      Introduction
Computer-mediated communication systems exhibit a fair amount of interpretative flexibility . That is, they can mean different things to different individuals or different groups, and their use continues to be interpreted and reinterpreted with the passing of time [

Fire performance of IEC rated LSZH cables under full-scale fire tests conducted by the Building Research Establishment Fire Research Station at Cardington, U.K.
The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in the demand for information technology. This has resulted in a corresponding rapid growth and accumulation of communication cabling in modern business premises, resulting in high volume, high density cable installations in ceiling and underfloor voids. The increased volume of various types of communication cables in these voids adds to the fire load, increasing the hazard of fire and smoke propagation in the event of a fire. In many cases, these voids may be connected to vertical shafts enabling the rapid spread of fire to other areas of a building.

It does this by enabling scientists to generate, analyse, share and discuss their insights, experiments and results in a more effective manner. The underlying computer infrastructure that provides these facilities is commonly referred to as the Grid At this time, there are a number of grid applications being developed and there is a whole raft of computer technologies that provide fragments of the necessary functionality. However there is currently a major gap between these endeavours and the vision of e-Science in which there is a high degree of easy-to-use and seamless automation and in which there are flexible collaborations and computations on a global scale. Our vision of the infrastructure that is needed to support the full richness of the e-Science vision draws on research and development in both the Grid and the Semantic Web , and adopts a service-oriented approach. A RESEARCH REPORT FROM SIGN LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION WITH DOMESTIC ASIAN ELEPHANTS IN NORTHERN THAILAND, 1994.
A Potential Foundation For An Elephant / Internet Interface? A Potential Solution To The Elephant Problem?
    INTRODUCTION
What are the potentials for communication with elephants? Where do elephants belong in the spectrum of species in communication with humans?
Many domestic Asian Elephants seem to have a continuously variable level of motivation. They seem to be constantly making judgements such as "How hungry am I now? How hard do I want to work for that bunch of bananas?" An observation often made by mahouts of domestic Asian elephants is that they are like children, that they lack initiative and altruism. They don't usually perform trained behaviors without the direction of a mahout and they almost never rescue a mahout from danger.
But are these characteristics much different from those of humans that have been enslaved?
Wild elephants show great initiative, altruism and cooperation in rescue and in many other areas of behavior. Orphaned elephants that have been raised by humans with kindness, sometimes show great friendship, initiative and altruism toward humans.
