The National Centers of Competence in Research (NCCRs) are placed under the authority of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) to promote long term research projects in areas of vital strategic importance for the evolution of science in Switzerland, for the country's economy and for Swiss society. Each Center of Competence is based in and managed by a university or other renowned research institution. A network links the research groups from this home institution with other teams throughout Switzerland. Federal funding for NCCRs is voted by Parliament, and completed by funding from the participating institutions and from third parties. Launched in 2001, the program presently includes 14 NCCRs.
The National Centres of Competence in Research ( NCCRs ) are managed by the Swiss National Science Foundation on behalf of the Federal Authorities.

magical curator Review by David Sless Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities: Evidence and Narrative. Edward Tufte is the magical curator of information design.
Following in the grand tradition of 19th century museum curators,
Craft It is, however, a paradoxical achievement. Information design is a practical craft: it is about making information accessible and usable. Yet Tufte gives us a book about information design which tells us nothing explicitly about the making of this book. We are presented with examples, the quality of which, most information designers would be unable to reproduce in their own work. Magic The design of this page, like the rest of the book, follows the conventional grid structure in which text and illustrations are harmoniously arranged on a page to provide a formally elegant spacing of elements. The grid is based on a series of repeated rectangular shapes and sizes and derives from the pre photographic era in which metal plates and lettering were arranged in rectangular blocks in frames. In the diagram below, the portion of the page in red is wholly devoted to explaining the principle he is then going to illustrate.

    Some Simple Rules of Argumentation
March 26, 2004, 12:04 PM These rules of argumentation (found via Mark ) are golden. They're based on the core observation that you will never change anyone's mind in a single argument, so it's a waste of your time to engage in protracted debates. The post is a little long, so I'll summarize. When you find yourself in an argument, follow this procedure:
  • State your case as clearly, rationally, and convincingly as you can. Never re-state it; this only hurts your argument and wastes everyone's time. Clarify any misunderstandings since people may disagree with your case simply because they mistook some of your points. Don't get trapped in endless clarifications, however; there's a point where the required understanding is simply based on a "you had to be there" experience and you can clarify forever and never get anywhere.

Visions of the Bereaved, Hallucination or Reality by Kay Witmer Woods, Ph.D. INTERESTING FAQ: We analyzed 238 contributions to our ADC website form exploring the relationship between the deceased and the person reporting the ADC. We found that 46 (19%)of the contacts occurred within 24 hours or less. Interestingly, 35 (76%) of the 46 contacts occurred between blood relatives. Only 5 (14%) occurred between significant others.
A BIG THANKS goes out to those who submitted their experiences on the website so that we can gain important insights into the ADC phenomena!

    Prosody Research at Bell Labs
Prosody: The study of the metrical structure of verse. More generally, prosody is the part of human communication that is not captured by the sequence of words.
    • Prosody: emphasis and intonation of speech. Pitch, amplitude, and spectral slope. Under-articulated vs. over-articulated phonemes. Short vs. long phonemes. Even raised eyebrows and shrugs. Prosody is used to mark important concepts. It marks beginnings and endings, and gives other speakers permission to take the floor. It marks questions. It carries emotional content. It has other, poorly understood, functions.
The research is important scientifically, as we have little hard knowledge about what information people communicate via prosody, and how it is done. The research also can shed light on basic questions like "How much of language is fixed by our anatomy, and how much is cultural?" and "How much of language is consciously accessible?"
