Comets and Meteors
The cycles of the Sun, Moon and Stars are very regular, and we know where they will be for hundreds of years. Not everything in space is like that, though. The bright tail of a comet and the streak of a meteor are two of the most beautiful surprises in nature. Meteors, asteroids, and comets are not really separate things, just different forms of the same thing - space debris (rocks). Very large chunks of rock in space are called asteroids. Thousands of asteroids orbit between Mars and Jupiter in the Asteroid belt. Meteoroids are smaller chunks of rock in space. When they enter our atmosphere they start to burn, and are called meteors. Meteors streak across the sky, blazing bright for only a few seconds. What we call "shooting stars" are actually meteors. As the Earth moves in its orbit around the Sun, it occasionally crosses the stream of dust left by a comet, and this causes a meteor shower. Sometimes meteors are large enough to survive the fiery trip through the atmosphere, and actually hit the ground. These are called meteorites. Most meteorites are small and they cause very little damage when they hit. Most of them land in water, which covers 2/3 of our planet. There are only two documented cases of a person being hit by a meteorite.

Asteroids
The Asteroid Gaspra. Asteroids are made of rocky and/or iron-nickel material and most are found in an orbit between Mars and Jupiter. Most are pitted with impact craters and dust left from collisions with other objects in the solar system. Some asteroids have other asteroids orbiting them as in the picture at right, the Asteroid Ida and its moon Dactyl. A group of asteroids orbit the sun called Near-Earth Asteroids because they are somewhat close to the Earth and occasionally may cross Earth's orbit. Could any hit the Earth? Experimental Sky Camera Comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) was the one of the best comets of all time. On its way towards perihelion, Comet Hyakutake passed within 0.1 AU of Earth on 1996 March 25.3 UT. This is the closest approach of a comet since 1983. The comet was large and bright for a few days close to this date, sporting a tail about 40 degrees long. A totally unforgetable sight.

Books Stories Comets and Meteors Book 443 Astronomy Piloted Space Flights The Mammoth Book of Golden Age Science Fiction This is the second book by Asimov bearing this title (one of the few times in his entire 500+ book output when he duplicated a title), and is infinitely better than the first. It isn’t just a matter of its being more current, or its having more, larger, and more colorful pictures. The fact is that Asimov himself knows more about the subject (having boned up on it to prepare Asimov’s Guide to Halley’s Comet ) and includes more and more interesting information. I still wouldn’t recommend it very strongly to adults, but for its target audience it could not be beat. John H. Jenkins

Books Stories Comets and Meteors Book 134 Astronomy How Did We Find Out the Earth Is Round? The Sun Publisher’s blurb If you look at the sky on a clear night, you may see a comet or meteor. A comet will appear as a small, faint cloud with a streak of light stretching out from one side. A meteor will look like a glowing object streaking across the sky. One of today’s finest science writers tells about these two fascinating astronomical topics in an easy-to-read text. Besides describing the physical characteristics and the well-known sightings of comets and meteors, Dr. Asimov clearly and concisely defines such related terms as meteorite, fireball, solar wind, and asteroid. This Beginning Science book is published under the supervision of educators and technical authorities. Some seven year olds and most eight year olds will be able to read it with no assistance. For younger readers, a list of words that may be difficult is included. Young astronomers will find this book with its color artwork and up-to-date photographs a helpful introduction to the study of comets and meteors. Review This is one of two books by Asimov bearing this title and is part of the Follett series of short astronomy books for very, very young children which started with

http://www.germantown.k12.il.us/html/Asteroid__Comets__and_Mete.html
Asteroids, Comets, and Meteors
In addition to the Sun and the nine planets, there are millions of other objects sailing through the Solar System. Asteroids are miniature planets. They are little lumps of rock and metal that circle the Sun. The asteroids are located between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars in what is called the "asteroid belt". The largest asteroid has been named Ceres. Ceres is over 600 miles in diameter (across). But the majority of asteroids are probably only a few feet wide and many millions of them may be no bigger than pebbles! Asteroids were formed billions of years ago. Scientists think that asteroids may have started out as small planets. Or, they may have been pieces of what tried to become a single large planet, but were kept from coming together because of Jupiter's strong gravity. The asteroids do not travel in set orbits like the planets. They are pulled by the gravity of Jupiter and Mars. Asteroids keep bumping in to each other, and when they do, pieces of rock break off. These pieces may streak through the sky towards Earth. They look like bright fireballs and are now called meteors.
