Talking and thinking about holidays in early childhood programs today is a "hot topic." There is an increasing diversity of children, families, and staff who make up our programs. Each may have different ideas of how to celebrate holidays. As educators, we also have the responsibility to meet both the intellectual and social needs of the children we work with. How we meet those needs also applies to how we include holidays in our curriculum. Finally, even for us as adults, the concept of holidays may not be as simple as it seemed when we were young. Particularly, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, and Halloween seem to challenge our actions in our work and leisure lives. Working through these issues is important, for ourselves, the children, families, and communities we live and work in.
THINKING CRITICALLY ABOUT THE CURRICULUM
As people who care for and educate young children, child care professionals often make choices based on the needs of children and families. We serve nutritious meals because we know that children's growing bodies need a well balanced diet. We make daily plans that include active play as well as quiet play because children's bodies and minds need both exercise and rest.

Since 1920 the day has been celebrated annually. The history of Columbus, first landing in the New World on October 12, will be retold in many social studies classes in October The following is a brief account of its history. On August 3, 1492 Columbus and 90 men set sail to find an easier route to Asia for the spice merchants. The expedition was sponsored by Queen Isabella of Spain, provided that Columbus would conquer some of the islands and mainland for Spain. On October 12 the ships landed on the island of Guanahani (in the Caribbean Islands) which Columbus immediately christened San Salvador and claimed it for Spain. When they landed on what is now Cuba they thought it was Japan!

FPW 2001 combines America's favorite pastime with important fire safety tips to teach children and their families how they can "cover the bases" to "strike out" preventable home fires. Sparky the Fire Dog®, celebrating his 50th birthday this year as NFPA's mascot, will play a visible role in coaching families and communities on the simple steps they can take to avoid fires. Every year, we make a special effort to include children in our Fire Prevention Week campaign, with help from firefighters and teachers," says Meri-K Appy, vice president of public education for NFPA. "Kids are very effective at driving fire safety messages home, which is where the risk of fire is greatest. This year, we'll use a baseball diamond as a visual cue; each base on the FPW diamond represents important safety tips."
