Columbus Day
The Discovery of America
Sebastiano del Piombo painted this portrait thirteen years after Columbus's death. The Columbus Navigation Homepage One of the most significant dates during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs was 12th October 1492: the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. The fact that Christopher Columbus (who was not originally Spanish) appealed to a foreign court to offer his services proved that the discovery of America was not incidental. Portugal and Castilla (Spain) were well-advanced in the exploration of overseas mercantile routes and Sevilla, a wealthy and populous Spanish city, was by then an important commercial centre. We know that the African routes were closed to Castilla in favour of Portugal, In 1479, under the Treaty of Alcacoba, Alfonso V of Portugal renounced his claims to Castilla and recognized the rights of Castilla over the Canary Islands, while Castilla recognized the rights of Portugal over the Azores, Cape Verde and Madeira. The Canary Islands were an excellent bridgehead for alternate routes. This is what Christopher Columbus offered and he offered it to a State that needed them, but which was also accustomed to and prepared for this type of venture. Unified Spain possessed in 1492 a powerful war machine, a solid economy, an exterior projection, naval experience including the exploration of trade routes and notable scientific-technical potential mathematicians, geographers, astronomers and shipbuilders who had been formed in a melting-pot of three cultures (Jews, Muslims and Christians). Its only rival was its neighbour, Portugal, which, as we know, had put a stop to Spanish expansion in Africa.

Also featured are profiles of activist groups such. Documentaries focus on issues such as the impact of the Columbus legacy, assimilation, the effects of colonization, the struggle to protect cultural symbols and identities, appropriation of land, and more.

Indigenous Resistance: Conquering Columbus
The American Indian Movement, or AIM, began their campaign to end the celebration of Columbus in 1992 in preparation for the 500th anniversary of his landing. Since then, AIM and their allies have protested Denver's Columbus Day parade every year in escalating demonstrations. In October 2000, over 130 people were arrested stopping the Columbus Day Parade.
The Sons of Italy, organizers of the Columbus Day Parade, hold their parade every year and say that Columbus Day is a patriotic holiday. They call attempts to stop the parade attacks on their First Amendment rights to free speech.

PHILOSOPHY
In 1992, there was a great deal of hooraw and foofaw about the 500th anniversary of the start of the invasion of both continents of the western hemisphere, which has been crassly described as "discovery" ever since, by dominant society historians (and everyone except indigenous peoples and their survivors). During this Quincentennial period there was an outpouring of educational materials, mostly more of the same biassed and stereotyped history. This has now died down a bit. Columbus Day is not as big a school holiday as (in the U.S.) Thanksgiving. But the Quincentennial occasion also gave rise to some self-scrutiny, and some that was prompted by Native groups, activists, historians, and educators. From one of the best sources comes an explanation for teachers certainly in Native schools if any are doing conventional mainstream social studies, but primarily for educators of non-Indian students as to why (and how) to revise what they teach. This page will select from materials reviewed and present links-to reviews of books (and occasional AV materials) especially well-suited for incorporation into standard social studies, de-mystifying and de-mythologising what most U.S. children are still taught. It will also present relevant modern documents statements by Native groups or leaders. Below from one of the best sources is the philosophy of this page:

What of Columbus?
Is today Columbus Day ? I know, the Political Correctness Police want him branded an evil killer and oppressor of the native races... but come on, our entire history is filled with oppression and killing. Taking land from those who have it because you want it. It isn't great, and in a civilized world, you hope the system allows for a more peaceful means of exploring, but we are a young race on this planet, and frankly, for most of our history it was "kill or be killed". Heck, before "modern times" the lifespan was about 27 years, that didn't leave lots of time for niceties. Regardless of what you think of Columbus and the consequences of his arrival in the Americas, it took remarkable bravery for the explorers 500 years ago to cross the Atlantic in quest of new horizons. But, I think, primarily because he was a " white male " - an unprotected class - and because we are now trying hard to compensate for all the injustices our ancestors might have forced upon the native population (or any appropriate injustice that we now feel guilty about), we have taken a national holiday from being a celebration of exploration and turned it into nothing more than an excuse for Sears' to hold a clearance sale Let me rant on...

"Catching Sinking Disciples"
I Corinthians 15:1-11; Luke 5:1-11 Let us pray: May the words of my mouth and meditations of each one of our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our strength and our salvation. Amen. The saying goes, "Catch a person a fish and he or she will eat for one day, teach a person to fishing and that person will fish for a lifetime." "Teach, then fish" was certainly the order of discipleship on the day Jesus met his lead disciples Peter, James and John on Lake Gennesaret (or as we call it "The Sea of Galilee"). On that day, the fishermen were exhausted from all night freshwater fishing with no catch. Jesus was fresh and ready to get on the water to impress the crowds with his teaching as they were pressing him for wisdom. Seizing the opportunity to teach and fish, Jesus jumped in Peter's boat (without introductions) and pushed out a bit on the water. Jesus had netted the interest, attention, and following of many people - unlike Peter - who couldn't even attract one fish to his nets.

Upon arriving the natives went out to meet Columbus. They were friendly and gregarious. How did Columbus react?  Well he said, "I could conquer them with fifty men and govern them as I please."  So he kidnapped several of them and took them back to Spain where they met the queen. This was enough, along with the promise of gold, to finance another voyage by Columbus.
When Columbus returned he demanded gold. To ensure cooperation those who refused or committed a minor offense had their nose and ears cut off. His men demanded their women for sexual purposes and raped them. Finally, the Arawaks had enough and resisted. This turned into an outright slaughter by Columbus. He turned his attack dogs loose who ripped the resisters apart. Finding no gold he captured about 1,500 natives, took them from their families and set off to Spain where 500 of them would die along the way. Now Columbus brought the name of God into the picture, "In the name of Holy Trinity, we can send from here all the slaves and brazil-wood which could be sold." Columbus acted in a manner that was more devil-like than God-like. How often are atrocities performed in the name of God?  This is simply Satan working to deceive people.

Defending Ourselves Against the Radical Historians
Part two of a two part article adapted from an address given to the Compass Conference on the Christian Situation held in Seattle on October 14, 1995 By Rev. J. Steven Wilkins
The 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America caused more than a little commotion. Seemingly every special-interest group registered their opposition to this explorer. The accusations and defamation's against Columbus reached levels seldom seen.
Even Fidel Castro, who in honor of the anniversary proclaimed himself a Native American, let it be known that his own sensitive soul suffered in unimaginable ways at the bare remembrance of the infamous Genoese explorer. Not to be left out, the eccentric churchlings of the National Council of Churches weighed in with an official pronouncement solemnly indicting Columbus for grand theft, racism, initiating destruction of a culture, rape, torture, maiming of indigenous peoples, invasion, genocide, slavery and ecocide (which, I found out, is not the murder of environmentalists). We need to understand this response to the Columbus anniversary: These young reactionaries didn't dream this up. This was not their idea of a nice fall frolic. Where did they get these ideas? They were taught these things by people who have professional degrees in history. And more than a few of these historians actually published books seeking to substantiate the charge that Columbus was a horrid combination of a scoundrel, hooligan, cut-throat, and generally all-round rapscallion.
