Saturday, October 11, 2003, 4pm TRANSFORM COLUMBUS DAY ALLIANCE CALLS FOR ABOLITION OF COLUMBUS DAY - OUTLINES YEARLONG STRATEGY FOR EFFORTS The Transform Columbus Day (TCD) Alliance, a coalition of over eighty social justice organizations, which has been protesting the Columbus Day parade in Denver since 1989, calls now for the unequivocal abolition of the Columbus Day, holiday on a local, state and national holiday. The celebration of Columbus is the veneration of colonialism, conquest, and genocide. As people of conscience, we must move our society closer to the democratic values of equality for all, through historical accuracy, justice in the judicial and political processes of the country, and respect for diverse peoples and cultures. During the upcoming year the TCD Alliance will embark on the following program:
  • An international call has gone out to encourage tens of thousands of people from around the world to come to Denver in 2004, either to celebrate the elimination of Columbus Day, or to march against the ongoing celebration of the holiday.

Peacework has been published monthly since 1972, intended to serve as a source of dependable information to those who strive for peace and justice and are committed to furthering the nonviolent social change necessary to achieve them. Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised. Views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of the AFSC.

The attacks on Columbus are ominous, because the actual target is Western civilization
Columbus Day approaches and this year has a special meaning. Christopher Columbus is a carrier of Western civilization and the very values attacked by terrorists on September 11. To the "politically correct," Columbus Day is an occasion to be mourned. They have mourned, they have attacked, and they have intimidated schools across the country into replacing Columbus Day celebrations with "ethnic diversity" days.
The politically correct view is that Columbus did not discover America, because people had lived here for thousands of years. Worse yet, it's claimed, the main legacy of Columbus is death and destruction. Columbus is routinely vilified as a symbol of slavery and genocide, and the celebration of his arrival likened to a celebration of Hitler and the Holocaust. The attacks on Columbus are ominous, because the actual target is Western civilization.
Prior to 1492, what is now the United States was sparsely inhabited, unused, and undeveloped. The inhabitants were primarily hunter-gatherers, wandering across the land, living from hand to mouth and

A message from the United Confederation of Taino People (UCTP): Subject: Questions To Ponder As Columbus Day nears... WHY DO WE CELEBRATE COLUMBUS DAY? What is the meaning of this day to each of us, or is there any meaning at all? Please, bring this up as a topic of discussion with others, and let me know what kind of responses you hear. Questions To Ponder As Columbus Day nears 1. Columbus sailed into the Caribbean and never even set foot in what is now known as the United States. So, why do we, in the United States, give him one of our 8 Federal holidays? 2. Why would Columbus be given credit for "discovering" the Americas anyway, when we all know those lands were already inhabited and had been for thousands of years? Didn't the inhabitants of those lands discover them? Look at any map of the US and see the many, many, many states, cities and towns that all bear the Native American names of people and peoples who once populated those regions: Illinois, Oklahoma, Cheyene, Nantuckett, Milwaukee, Yuma, Omaha, Witchita, Tallahassee, Mississippi, Muskogee, Tennessee, Allegheny, Missouri, Kentucky, Huron, Tuscalloosa and on and on and on...... 3. Knowing that Native Americans were already here, and Columbus never was here, why does anyone go along with the myth that "Columbus Discovered America", when we all know it is not true?

Clueless About Columbus

October 14, 2003
by Michael P. Tremoglie
Once again it is that time of the year the liberal multiculturalists love so well. It is time to skewer Western Civilization. It is Columbus Day. Today Columbus Day is disparaged by liberal multiculturalists who distort the history of Christopher Columbus and has been since 1992. An October 2, 2003 post to the Portland Independent Media Center addressed the issue of Columbus Day by saying "Columbus was a slave trader (he kidnapped them and then sold them to the portugese (sic)... he was also responsible for the deaths of over fourteen

The Chef and the Child
The ACF is concerned about hunger in the United States. To help in the fight against hunger, the National ACF has established The Chef and the Child Foundation, our voice in the fight against hunger. As part of the Chef and the Child Program, the ACF Columbus Chapter in cooperation with the Children's Hunger Alliance, has developed a program called "The Little Chefs Club". At after school sites in the Columbus area, chapter members donate their time to teach children hands-on food preparation. The children have fun learning the basics about food, and they get to eat what they have prepared. Volunteers are needed for the Little Chefs Club. ACF Columbus Chapter members who are available to make the commitment to teach one day a week for four weeks can call the chapter office at (614) 470-2002. The message of the Chef and the Child Foundation can be summed up in the old adage: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." every day www.ohtf.org

Most people in our area don't really pay attention to Columbus Day other that they won't be recieving any mail. I wanted to do something to commemorate the day so I created this installation on the campus where I teach. Each of the yellow flags have "Columbus" and "Colonize" printed on them. The red flags have 'survive' and "live" printed on them. I created this work completely annonomously. I wanted people to "discover" the artwork and make their own conclusions about its' meaning. The flags are formed into a medicine wheel design. I thought the shadows worked nicely.
