Metallic Confetti Metallic Confetti Metallic Confetti Columbus Day Columbus Day is celebrated on October 12th, it is observed on the second Monday in October in the Americas to pay tribute to Christopher Columbus.* Columbus is credited with discovering the "New World", what we know as the Western Hemisphere. We know today that he rather re-discovered this area and publicized his findings. The Vikings had already established settlements in North America when Columbus sailed by. There are varied views on Columbus's character and mixed emotions on whether this day should be celebrated. Columbus is known as one of the greatest mariners in history. He is considered a visionary, a great explorer, an entrepreneur, a poor administrator, and destroyer of native cultures.

Original Author Unknown Need: Blue Construction Paper, Flat Sponges (the kind after you put them in water raise up to a regular sponge), Paint, Cookie Cutter in the shape of a star, Red Crepe Streamers, White Crepe Streamers, Clear Contact Paper, String or Yarn Directions: Cut out star shapes on the sponges. Then put them in water to make them regular size. Glue a 35 mm canister to one end of the sponge. This will keep the paint off the children's hands. Dip the star shaped sponge in white paint and then onto the construction paper. If you do not want to use the sponges you could use the star shaped cookie cutters instead. When dry you can add contact paper so that you can put it outside but I found the crepe paper runs in the rain and doesn't look good. (You can try it) Fold the blue construction paper into a cylinder and staple together Then add the red and white streamers. A very patriotic symbol for Memorial Day.

Columbus Day Funology October 12 th Columbus Day is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October in honor of Christopher Columbus's 1492 discovery of America. For many this is a controversial holiday in that some people believe that Columbus was not a hero. In his conquest of the New World, Columbus often claimed land that already belonged to other people and mistreated the inhabitants of these areas. In many areas Columbus Day now focuses on the discovery of the New World rather than the actions of one man. The first celebration of Columbus Day took place on October 12, 1792 and in 1937 October 12, became a Federal Holiday. President Johnson moved the holiday to the 2nd Monday in October in 1968 to create a three-day weekend. Many celebrate this holiday with parades and parties sponsored by Italian-American groups. History:
A cornucopia, also called a horn of plenty, is a symbol of abundance taken from an ancient legend. Thousands of years ago, the people of Greece believed that their god, Zeus, was reared by a beautiful maiden. As the story goes, she fed the infant Zeus an endless supply of goat's milk from a cornucopia, or goat's horn. As centuries passed, most people forgot this ancient legend, but the cornucopia remained a symbol of an endless supply of food or drink. As the history of the United States unfolded, the cornucopia became a symbol for Thanksgiving, the day set aside in thanks for abundance.

Arts and Crafts Mapmaker, Mapmaker Sail On! Where in the World? Mapmaker, Mapmaker
Back in the days before satellites, maps were based on careful observation. Sailors would pay attention to how far they traveled and the distance between land masses. They would then record this information on rough maps.
How observant are you? Make a map of your home, your classroom, the playground or your neighborhood. Do your best to space objects to scale. After creating the rough design, embelish your map with original artwork.

Sail On!
Ask a local appliance store for three large boxes. Divide students into three groups. Assign each group to re-create one of the three ships that took part in Columbus's first voyage. Use the box to form the ship's body. Poster board may be used for sails. Fingerpaints, posterpaints, markers, crayons, and construction paper can help decorate the boats. Once the ships are completed, let children take turns "sailing" them
Where in the World?
While Columbus may have used a different method of transportation than most people do today, travel is still very much a part of our lives.
As a class, discuss some of the reasons people travel, as well as the kinds of places people visit today. Encourage each child to think of the most distant place to which they have ever traveled, then create a poster about the place.

  • Math- It took Columbus 69 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. To help students understand the length of time, cut out 69 ships. Number the ships from 1 to 69. Tape a ship on a bulletin board or across the blackboard every day. On the 69th day, have a celebration of some kind. Some other math activities that you can do with the students are: create Columbus word problems using the ships; have students determine how many days till the 69th day; write down the numbers that are odd or even; count by 2's, 5's, 10's; review place value. Writing : Read "The Log of Christopher Columbus-The First Voyage" by Steve Lowe or any other journal/log book on Christopher Columbus. Explain to students that they will make pretend they were on one of the ships and to keep a log of a day in their life on the ship. Students can choose the ship and their job on that ship. This assignment can consist of one day or one week. Writing II : Students make a list of things they would take to on a long sea voyage.
