Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students often ask why these texts are important and how they relate to more conventional U.S. literature. You might suggest that they entertain a change in their traditional concept of the U.S. as an English-based country, considering the paradigm of a land that from the start was in contention by forces of several language groups and distinct origins. Students should be taught that this situation is still the same, in spite of the assumption that English won out. The forces present in this period are still contending for a place in U.S. territory. Perhaps the oldest tradition in the U.S. is the struggle among different groups for the recognition of the right to participate fully in making the future of this land.

Expanding Horizons
European exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries drew on many sources. A growing desire for expansion and trade, along with advances in shipbuilding and commercial technique, fostered the search for new markets and for the legendary sources of precious metals and other commodities. Portuguese exploration and trade along the West African coast and to Atlantic islands, encouraged and directed by Prince Henry de Avis, the Navigator , continued throughout the 15th century. He assembled an international team of experts which made revolutionary advances in geography, navigation, and cartography. Handbooks, guides, and charts, along with the invention of more sophisticated and practical nautical instruments, professionalized what had been largely an intuitive craft. Crucial to these innovations were Muslim and Jewish contributions in mapmaking and navigational instruments. Christopher Columbus went to sea on the crest of these maritime advances.

Explorers of the Millennium
Our web site, "Explorers of the Millennium," will provide students with a wealth of information about the most important explorers of the past thousand years in a simple, easy-to-use format. We included reports on nineteen explorers, chosen by members of our team. We organized the explorers on separate "Hall of Fame" and "Timeline" web pages, so that users can look for a particular explorer by name or by century. We have a links page to help students find other helpful Web sites that relate to the explorers selected. A quiz section gives visitors a chance to see what they know about some of our explorers. A feedback page invites visitors to submit their own nominations for our Explorers' Hall of Fame. We hope that a visit to "Explorers of the Millennium" will answer students' questions about explorers, lead them to new sources of information, and encourage them to think critically about which explorers were the "greatest" and why. A sailor on board the Pinta sighted land early in the morning of October 12 , 1492, and a new era of European exploration and expansion began. The next day, the 90 crew members of Christopher Columbus's three-ship fleet ventured onto the Bahamian island of Guanahaní, ending a voyage begun nearly ten weeks earlier in Palos, Spain.

As a reward for his valuable discovery, the Spanish crown granted Columbus the right to bear arms . His new Coat of Arms added the royal charges of Castile and Leon and an image of islands to his traditional family arms. Columbus further modified the design to include a continent beside the pictured islands. Before his final voyage, the Spanish monarchs prepared a Book of Privileges, a collection of agreements showing how Columbus was remunerated for his explorations. In 1502, four copies of the book were known to exist. The Library of Congress's precious copy of this work is considered one of the " Top Treasures " included in the online exhibition American Treasures of the Library of Congress

Introduction Although the Vikings traveled to North America more than 900 years ago, it was Christopher Columbus' good luck in 1492 that whipped Europe into a frenzy. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, the Spanish Monarchs whom funded Columbus' exploration, were the first to realize the potential wealth of the New World. Spain became the richest and most powerful nation in the world. "How long will it last? ........No one knows. More importantly, will other European Countries allow Spain to reign supreme?

Christopher Columbus
Great explorer
INTRODUCTION
Christopher Columbus was possibly one of the greatest explorers ever known.
BACKGROUND
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451, and died on May 20, 1506. Columbus was married in 1479. His wife, Dona Felipa, died after his son was born. Christopher Columbus had two brothers. His dad was a weaver. When Columbus was older he helped his dad on the loom. He had little education and only when he was an adult, learned to read and write. He believed that the world was round, not flat, and tried for seven years to prove his point. Columbus always wanted to go to sea. Columbus believed that he could find India by sailing westward.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Christopher Columbus was one of the greatest sea men and explorers. He was granted three ships for his first voyage. They were the Pinta, the Santa Maria, and the Nina. On his first voyage he traveled west and found an island in the Bahamas. Columbus landed in the New World on October 12, 1492. On the second voyage he passed Puerto Rico and Navidad on November 27-28. On his third voyage he found South America, and Jamaica. On his fourth and last voyage, Columbus found Guanaja Island, and Honduras in Central America. Christopher Columbus tried to reach India but instead found the New World. In the West Indies he saw foods such as pineapples, sweet potatoes, and corn. Columbus used a sand glass to time the speed of the ship. In Cuba he found Indians smoking the plant known as tobacco.
