11 COLORADO SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE IN "BULLY-PROOFING
YOUR SCHOOL" PROGRAM AS PART OF
3-YEAR IMPLEMENTATION

Denver-Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar, Ed Guajardo Lucero, program officer for The Colorado Trust, and Dr. Delbert Elliott, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at CU-Boulder, announced today that eleven Colorado grade and middle schools will participate in a 3-year implementation of the "Bully-Proofing Your School" program beginning this Fall as part of the Safe Communities-Safe Schools Initiative and the Colorado Anti-Bullying Project. The Bully-Proofing Your School program was announced today at Vivian Elementary School in Lakewood, one of the schools which will participate in the program. Bully-Proofing Your School is a comprehensive school climate program designed to support schools in creating a safe learning environment. The program focuses on converting the silent majority, who are neither bullies nor victims, into the caring majority who join together to take a stand for a safe and bully-free school. The Bully-Proofing program is designed for elementary and middle school students with specific curriculum designed for each level. The program includes six basic components: staff training, student instruction, support of the victims, intervention with the bullies, systems intervention, and the development of a positive, caring climate within the school. It was developed by Dr. William Porter, Director of Student Achievement Services in the Cherry Creek Schools, and four other professionals in the Cherry Creek District. The Bully-Proofing program is used in elementary and middle schools both locally and nationally.

January 28, 2002 HELP AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS ON
SCHOOL SECURITY AND SAFETY PLANNING
Denver. In light of recent investigations into allegations of sexual assaults occurring at two schools, many schools have announced that they are examining options for making their schools safer. To assist schools in these efforts, Attorney General Ken Salazar and Dr. Del Elliott from the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at CU-Boulder, today issued this advisory to inform communities about safe school planning assistance available through the Safe Communities-Safe Schools Initiative. Although there is no fail-safe approach, developing comprehensive safe school plans contributes to a safer environment in our schools. Safe school planning includes the development of policies and procedures that address issues of school security. As part of the safe school planning process, the Center encourages the development of school/community planning teams that should consider: 1) appropriate supervision and security during and after school; 2) identification of areas within a school and times of day for vulnerability; 3) provisions for screening visitors; and 4) development of procedures to handle unauthorized visitors. Appropriate measures can then be considered and action taken to address issues of vulnerability. This assistance in safe school planning is available to schools and communities in Colorado through a grant by The Colorado Trust to the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at CU-Boulder as part of the Safe Communities-Safe Schools Initiative. The Initiative was designed to help Colorado schools and communities to establish safe school plans. Safe school planning includes school assessments, crisis management, recommendations for effective violence prevention programs, and the development of an interagency social support team to support at-risk students.

Colorado Schools Offered Training On Developing School Safety Plans
Aug. 6, 2003 The Safe Communities-Safe Schools Initiative, Colorado Attorney General Ken Salazar, Professor Delbert Elliott, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at CU-Boulder (Violence Prevention Center), The Colorado Trust and the Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool today announced four regional training sessions to be held in October 2003.
The free sessions will provide practical tools for school administrators and school resource officers to develop safe school plans, and information and guidance on implementing Colorado's school safety laws.
The Safe Communities-Safe Schools Initiative works with Colorado schools and communities to create safe and welcoming learning environments for students and school staff. Following Columbine, and as a result of the Initiative, several Colorado laws were passed to help schools and communities deal with school safety issues.
The four sessions will provide training for school administrators, school board members, and school resource officers on how to implement Colorado's school safety laws and school safety issues. The following are some of the areas that will be covered during this training:

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement. METHODOLOGY Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.
