Well-stocked, staffed school libraries boost FCAT scores, UCF research shows
Students at schools with better libraries outperform peers on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, University of Central Florida research reveals
ORLANDO, Fla. Students at schools with well-staffed libraries that circulate the most books and have the most computers outperform their peers on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, according to research at the University of Central Florida. FCAT scores, the state's primary measure of student achievement, were 20 percent higher in 2000-01 in reading at high schools that employed at least one full-time professional librarian and the equivalent of one other full-time library employee, UCF education professor Donna Baumbach concluded in her "Making the Grade" report. FCAT scores also were highest at elementary and middle schools with well-staffed libraries. Fifty-five percent of students passed the FCAT reading test at high schools with a full-time professional library media specialist and one or more employees who worked a combined 40 hours or more a week, compared with 37 percent at other high schools. Other factors influencing test scores include the size of a school's library collection, the age of the materials and the availability of computers in the library. Like studies in Colorado, Oregon, Texas, Iowa and New Mexico, the Florida research shows there is a strong correlation between available resources in a school's library and student achievement.

Whether it is derived from whim or from serious research, a model offers its user a means of comprehending an otherwise incomprehensible problem. An instructional design model gives structure and meaning to an I.D. problem, enabling the would-be designer to negotiate her design task with a semblance of conscious understanding. Models help us to visualize the problem, to break it down into discrete, manageable units. The value of a specific model is determined within the context of use. Like any other instrument, a model assumes a specific intention of its user. A model should be judged by how it mediates the designer's intention, how well it can share a work load, and how effectively it shifts focus away from itself toward the object of the design activity. Models, like other tools, shape the consciousness of those who use them. The tool molds the wielder who molds the tool, ad infinitum. Our models frame the reality we impose on the world and the experience that is forged out of their use brings us to higher levels of understanding about the design problem, but only within the framework of the specific models we adopt.

This position reports to the Principal, School for the Deaf, and is responsible to support curriculum, instruction and technology integration efforts / activities, and to manage daily access to and utilization of information and technology resources, including library, media, computer, video, and telecommunications. This position serves as a consultant / staff development trainer to students, teachers, and other educational staff to develop and broaden skills, knowledge and experience in the areas of library, media, and technology resources, and provides basic technical assistance and support.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in Educational Media, Library Media, or equivalent from an accredited college or university; specialization in Deaf Education preferred; Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado, with Educational Media Specialist endorsement; added endorsement for Special Education II Severe Needs – Hearing preferred; Experience teaching / working with children (in an educational environment) who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing; experience in library media, technology or related field preferred; Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced skill level. CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care."

ACIP Summary Statement
The ACIP held an emergency meeting by conference call on Friday, March 28, 2003, to make recommendations to CDC regarding cases of cardiac adverse events that have been reported following smallpox vaccination. A list of participants appears at the bottom of this page. The specific questions that the Committee was asked to address were:

    Geneva Overholser holds the Curtis B. Hurley Chair in Public Affairs Reporting, for the Missouri School of Journalism, in its Washington bureau.       Mission Statement The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The mission is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats; providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing and using information and ideas; and working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students. (Information Power, p. 1) This is the mission statement that I gave my administration when asked what is the purpose of the library. I needed this statement to show my administrators why the library is such an important part of the school. We as library media specialists are not people who just sit and check out books. Though we may not deal with students seven or eight periods a day, we do have many "chores" to do. When school started last year, I went in to visit my new principal. She told me that I was the third administrator of the school. I finally found someone who realized the work it takes to run a library media center. The administrative functions of the school library are often done behind-the-scenes but are essential to the operation of the library. The library must serve teachers and students to its fullest and it is your responsibility to make that happen. There are communities where the school library is the only library in town. Are you prepared to serve the community as well as the school?

    (Denver) - Voters throughout Colorado support the State of Colorado's contributions to building a new campus for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center on the site of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. In a survey completed last month, 88 percent of the respondents favored the project, in part for its support to medical and health research. Voters also emphasized the importance of medical and health research to health, jobs and the Colorado economy. The significant majority of residents, 79 percent, also support efforts on behalf of Colorado to offer financial incentives to attract medical and health research, such as labs and biotechnology companies. Eighty-six percent of the respondents believe spending money on medical and health research can benefit Colorado's economy in terms of jobs and incomes. "This is a vitally important message," said John Buechner, University of Colorado president. "We are delighted that Colorado residents recognize the long-range, and statewide, benefits of building the new campus at Fitzsimons. We expect the increased research space on the new campus will attract millions of new dollars in grants and contracts for medical and health research to improve the health of all Americans."

(Reuters) - The University of Colorado's regents gave a vote of confidence to the school's president on Wednesday, a day after a report said sex, drugs and alcohol were used to lure football recruits without top officials being aware of it. The university has been under fire for its football recruiting practices since January, when depositions from a lawsuit over a rape at an off-campus party surfaced. The report did not recommend firing any school official despite noting "systemic failings" in the school's oversight of its athletics department. "I trust President (Elizabeth) Hoffman will respond thoughtfully to the commission's recommendations," regent Peter Steinhauer said at a meeting to formally receive the blue-ribbon panel report on the scandal. The regents' meeting was not an official vote on the job status of Hoffman, and other board members also praised her.
