Summary of Project
This obesity prevention project, for students in grades K-5, links nutritional science experts with classrooms at elementary schools to provide science enrichment in class, after-school and outreach activities to teach healthy lifestyles. A diverse team of classroom activity leaders (health professionals, farmers, cooks) will visit the classroom throughout the school year. They will deliver a program that is customized to build on needs, knowledge and opportunities of the class and the school. A joint school team will design the specific program. The project will provide interactive, "hands-on", fun, and challenging educational science enrichment activities that use examples and exercises (science, math and literacy) from food, nutrition, healthy eating, physical activity, the biology of body weight regulation and body image. Internet-based technology will be used for many lessons, activities and data collection on health behaviors and student knowledge. The project will be evaluated by: a) determining the rate of weight and body mass index (BMI) gain, b) improvement in science-based health knowledge and c) improvement in health behaviors in elementary school students.

This page provides information on The Utah Arthritis Program is and what we're doing to assist those with arthritis in Utah. Mission
Increase the quality of life among persons in Utah affected by arthritis. Arthritis affects nearly one of every six Americans and is the leading cause of disability. The medical and social costs total almost $65 billion annually. This amount is expected to increase dramatically by the year 2020, when it is estimated that 60 million individuals will be affected. Clearly, arthritis has become one or our most pressing public health concerns. With these facts in mind, the Utah Department of Health launched The Utah Arthritis Program. The mission of the Utah Arthritis Program is to improve the quality of life for people affected by arthritis. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Utah Arthritis Program is focused on measuring the occurrence of arthritis in Utah, improving arthritis communications and education, and increasing participation in programs proven to help those with arthritis. We are working closely with the CDC, the Utah/Idaho Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, and local health departments to build a comprehensive, effective program. The long-term goals of the program support those of the National Arthritis Action Plan, which are to:

WEIGHT LOSS/NUTRITION PROGRAM
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
James O. Hill, Ph.D.
Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Dr. Hill also serves as the Director of the Center for Human Nutrition, a nutrition center funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Founded by James O. Hill, Ph.D. and colleagues at the University of Colorado Center for Human Nutrition, renowned for their research on obesity, the program was developed to help provide research-based, practical solutions to overweight and obesity in the United States. It has been proven successful because it focuses on behavior modification to achieve long-term weight loss as opposed to fad diets that often deliver only short-term benefits. Eating for Success
The Colorado Weigh nutrition component teaches program participants how to make better food choices to help promote weight loss. Because diet is an integral part of overall health, the program emphasizes good nutrition as well as portion control. Participants also are counseled on strategies for eating right at home and away from home and how to make permanent changes in their food choices. Exercise: A Key to Success
The Big Picture

Long-term, successful weight management requires dealing with emotions and stress in a healthy and constructive manner because these factors often trigger behaviors that can interfere with weight loss efforts. The Colorado Weigh program fosters awareness of the relationship between behaviors and attitudes to teach participants healthy strategies for dealing with life stressors.
