As a main attraction at the opening of Elitch Gardens in 1890, Baldwin stunned the crowd with his act.
A balloonist in the Spanish-American War, he also served in WWI. Other accomplishments include being the first in Colorado to fly a powered aircraft of his own design and construction. Baldwin is credited with Colorado's first amphibian take-off in his pusher plane from Denver's Sloans Lake.

The Pew Faculty Fellowship, a five-year program funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, was established to enhance education in international affairs by encouraging outstanding college and university faculty to incorporate the case method of instruction into their teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses. Case teaching grounds academic instruction in the concrete reality of professional experience by engaging students in highly interactive class discussion of specific events. In the five years of the program, 1990-1995, 116 Fellowships were awarded to diverse faculty at liberal arts colleges, public and private universities and graduate and military schools in the United States and Canada. Fellows participated in an intensive two-week summer institute on case teaching, writing, and course design at the Kennedy School and in follow-up workshops, and each taught an international affairs course that incorporated the case method. Pew Faculty Fellows are currently writing and teaching cases on international relations, negotiation, foreign policy, comparative politics, and international dimensions of economics, development, sociology, law, security, and the environment.

Colorado wins US 'party school' rankings
Staff and agencies
Tuesday August 19, 2003

They are the university rankings where the winner complains and this year was no exception. This week the University of Colorado at Boulder was definitely unhappy about being named the top 'party school' in the US. "Anybody looking at it has to take it with a grain of salt," Ron Stump, the university's vice chancellor for student affairs, complained to the Chronicle of Higher Education. "Some study hard and play hard, but those who just play hard are not going to stay around long," he said. The Princeton Review guide for college applicants also publishes rankings for the best food, best dorms and top "stone-cold sober schools" based on surveys of 106,000 students on 351 campuses. (Most sober is Brigham Young University in Utah, which also comes first for most religious students.) The party school list takes into account student reports of the amount of alcohol and drug use, the lack of time spent studying, and the popularity of fraternities and sororities on each campus.

Denver District Judge Joseph Meyer issued an injunction barring implementation of the voucher plan, the first in the nation since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the issue last year. "I see no way to interpret the voucher program statute in a way that does not run afoul of the principle of local control," he wrote. "The goals of the voucher program are laudable. However, even great ideas must be implemented within the framework of the Colorado Constitution." The court challenge, filed by a coalition of teachers, religious and education groups, made Colorado the latest battleground in a nationwide fight over vouchers. Supporters say vouchers give poor parents a choice to take their children out of failing public schools and motivate those schools to get better. Opponents object to giving state support to religious schools and contend the plan will undermine public education by siphoning off students and the tax dollars they bring.
