Report on Regional Library Service Systems This 5-page PDF briefly describes allocated funding, planned expenditures, activities, and statewide cooperative projects administered by RLSS's to serve the library community. The fiscal situation in Colorado had a direct impact on the Regional Library Service Systems for the fiscal year which began July 1, 2003. Despite ongoing operational changes, libraries will have access to some level of support, training, and cooperative services through a System. Ongoing System-sponsored projects and services include:
  • courier service among libraries statewide a statewide discount purchasing plan professional materials collections access to DuPage teleconferences OCLC No-stop ILL service consulting for schools in the Power Library project assistance in getting library holdings on The Colorado Virtual Library
  • Various training opportunities sponsored by the Systems provide a chance for multitype libraries to:
    • gain needed continuing education discuss common needs work toward possible solutions to identified problems Network to exchange ideas for improving library services in Colorado

ERIC Digest. Author: Lance, Keith Curry ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology, Syracuse, NY. THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement. METHODOLOGY Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.

OAS_AD('Top'); Colorado Library Exhibit Pushes Boundaries of What Defines Art Thursday, November 08, 2001 By Catherine Donaldson-Evans An American flag might offend people if it's displayed, but apparently ceramic penises won't. OAS_AD('Middle'); That's the rationale the Boulder Public Library has been accused of adopting, and suddenly the organization has found itself awash in controversy. The flap started when library Director Marcellee Gralapp told a group of employees they couldn't hang a large American flag over one of the entryways because it might offend some people. She was quoted by a Boulder newspaper, The Daily Camera, as saying that the gesture "could compromise our objectivity." Following the predictable outcry, the library opted to mount a flag on a pole over the entrance instead. The controversy should have gone away. But it hasn't. It reared itself again because the library administration is displaying ceramic penises dangling from knitted cozies on a clothesline as part of an art exhibit on domestic violence. It's the decision about what is and isn't appropriate for a public building that has outraged some in the community.

Cornell helps provide documents online to flooded Colorado library
By Bill Steele Students and faculty at Colorado State University will be reading publications from the stacks at Cornell's Mann Library for the next year or so, in a special arrangement to help the Colorado school deal with a devastating flood that destroyed many of its library's holdings. During that time, articles requested at a library desk at the Fort Collins, Colo., campus will be served up from Ithaca, via the Internet. "We are blessed with a superb collection and dedicated staff, and it seemed appropriate in CSU's time of need to share our riches with them," said Sarah Thomas, the Carl A. Kroch University Librarian at Cornell. "The thought of a student body and faculty prevented from access to materials supporting learning and scholarship is too much for us to bear." On Monday, July 27, eight inches of rain fell on Fort Collins in 24 hours, creating a "500-year flood" that swept away homes and killed five people. At CSU, water poured from nearby Spring Creek into a tiny stream known as Arthur's Ditch, building into a wall of water 4 feet high that surged across the campus. Books, computers and furniture were swept out of buildings onto lawns, and years of reference and research materials were destroyed. In a cruel irony, the university's Morgan Library was undergoing renovations, so some 450,000 books, periodicals and monographs about one-fourth of the library's holdings were stored in the building's basement. The onrushing water literally broke down the basement wall, washed documents off the shelves and filled the basement with 8 feet of water.

The John B. Hawley Jr. Library is a great resource for students and faculty. The library's comfortable and inviting environment is well suited for study and leisure. Students and faculty access more than 22,000 books, and numerous magazine and newspaper subscriptions for research, study, and casual reading. The library's resources include computers, reference works on CD-ROMs and online, popular paperback books, DVDs, and videos, which are available to students free of charge.
The library also houses extensive Western history, mountaineering, and art collections, as well as a collection of alumni and faculty works. Hawley Library staff collaborate with faculty to create a collection that supports the FVS curriculum as well as the varied interests of Fountain Valley community’s many avid readers.
Students visit the library between classes to read newspapers, check e-mail, or browse through current magazines. During study hall hours, students frequent the library in search of resources for assignments, books on reserve and bibliographic information. Students often find a favorite spot in the private reading rooms, which they go to frequently for quiet study. Classes meet in the library to work on specific assignments, which may include use of the digital editing equipment or the online resources.
