Geotechnology Instruction in the Front Range of Colorado
Tina Cary
Introduction
This report is confined geographically to the Front Range of Colorado, from Fort Collins in the north to Colorado Springs in the south. Geotechnology includes remote sensing, geographic information systems, global positioning satellites, photogrammetry, and surveying - technologies for measuring the Earth. Instruction in geotechnology includes both training and education: training courses offered by vendors about their products, and education in concepts and principles, including courses offered at schools, colleges and universities. Under the heading of education, K-12 is discussed briefly; the body of the report highlights course offerings at colleges and universities.
Training
Many vendors offer training courses, seminars, and computer-based training. In the geotechnologies, seminars and courses are offered in the Front Range routinely by companies that sell geographic information system software, GPS systems, image processing software, and remotely-sensed data. Companies typically provide information on the Internet about their course offerings, Authorized Training Centers, or Certified Trainers.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Cándido Bareiro, López's ex-commercial agent in Europe, returned to Paraguay in 1869 and formed a major Lopizta faction. He also recruited General Bernadino Caballero, a war hero with close ties to López. After President Juan Bautista Gil was assassinated in 1877, Caballero used his power as army commander to guarantee Bareiro's election as president in 1878. When Bareiro died in 1880, Caballero seized power in a coup. Caballero dominated Paraguayan politics for most of the next two decades, either as president or through his power in the militia. His accession to power is notable because he brought political stability, founded a ruling partythe Coloradosto regulate the choice of presidents and the distribution of spoils, and began a process of economic reconstruction. Despite their professed admiration for Francia, the Colorados dismantled Francia's unique system of state socialism. Desperate for cash because of heavy debts incurred in London in the early postwar period, the Colorados lacked a source of funds except through the sale of the state's vast holdings, which comprised more than 95 percent of Paraguay's total land. Caballero's government sold much of this land to foreigners in huge lots. While Colorado politicians raked in the profits and themselves became large landowners, peasant squatters who had farmed the land for generations were forced to vacate and, in many cases, to emigrate. By 1900 seventy-nine people owned half of the country's land.

GeoTech Colorado 2004 - GIS Institute for teachers Have you always wanted to integrate real-world spatial data (e.g. hazards, population, and aerial photographs) in a problem-solving, standards-based environment? Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in your classroom allows you and your students to investigate current and historical issues such as these. You can use GIS to explore the interactions of the natural, cultural, and physical environment. Explore GIS in a one-week institute FOR teachers BY teachers at GeoTech Colorado 2004.
The event is sponsored by the Colorado Geographic Alliance, University of Denver, and the US Geological Survey, and will be of interest to all Grade 5 through 12 Geography, Science, Mathematics, History, Environmental Studies, and Language Arts teachers who seek to use computer maps, databases, satellite imagery, and aerial photographs to engage students in exciting, standards-based, real-world investigations of phenomena and issues concerning our planet Earth. Two computer labs will support intermediate and beginning strands, so that the institute will be valuable (1) if you have never used GIS or (2) if you have used GIS in the past and are seeking to develop your own lessons.
The Institute will be held Monday-Friday, 21-25 June 2004, 8:00am - 4:30pm, at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School, 1250 Welton Street, Denver, Colorado 80204, Room 115C (on the ground floor).

"Geography tells what is where, why and what of it." - Isaiah Bowman Students often ask "What can I do with geography?" While it is easy to get excited about maps, different cultures and environments, and even being a better citizen through geography, it is harder to see how geographic knowledge can lead to good jobs or meaningful careers. However, in recent years people have discovered that large numbers of societal problems have geographic dimensions and that education in geography provides essential skills for real-world problem solving. The range of jobs with a geographic aspect to them can be found in any newspaper, with articles about world hunger, environmental quality, hazardous-waste disposal, crime, urban housing, agricultural productivity, water management, transportation, and the value of land and real estate. As a result, geography has become a necessary ingredient in hundreds of different jobs. The following list contains a representative sample of job titles of former graduates with a Geography major. Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. Students obtaining employment immediately upon graduation are usually those with the best college records and a willingness to relocate to find a job. Some of these jobs also require education beyond a bachelors' degree.

Spatial information technologies refers to various tools that inventory, assess, and analyze geographic information in a computerized environment. Basically, a geographic information system (GIS) allows the computer to "think" it is a map - a map with the ability to analyze geographic information and tell its users about any part of the world. A GIS specifies three characteristics about a location:
where it is geographically (e.g., latitude and longitude coordinates)
