Introduction
  • Map projections are attempts to portray the surface of the earth or a portion of the earth on a flat surface. Some distortions of conformality, distance, direction, scale, and area always result from this process. Some projections minimize distortions in some of these properties at the expense of maximizing errors in others. Some projection are attempts to only moderately distort all of these properties.
      Conformality
When the scale of a map at any point on the map is the same in any direction, the projection is conformal. Meridians (lines of longitude) and parallels (lines of latitude) intersect at right angles. Shape is preserved locally on conformal maps.
      Distance
A map is equidistant when it portrays distances from the center of the projection to any other place on the map.
      Direction
A map preserves direction when azimuths (angles from a point on a line to another point) are portrayed correctly in all directions.

Geography Dinosaur National Monument comprises 210,000 acres (325 square miles) of northwest Colorado and northeast Utah, straddling the border of these two states at the northeast extremity of the Great Basin Desert. About two-thirds of the park is in Colorado. The Monument is situated on a high plateau ranging in elevation from 4,500 to 7,000 feet. In 1938 the canyons of the Yampa and Green Rivers were added to the original 80 acres. These colorful canyons, carved into spectacular geological formations, expose much of the Earth's history and provide numerous activities for outdoor enthusiasts, including river rafting.
Local conditions vary greatly with geology and other factors. Summer afternoon showers may limit access to or from specific sections of the monument because a normally easy drive crosses a section of Mancos shale or Mowry shale. When wet, these formations create roads that are greasy, impassable and often dangerous. Usually, given the sporadic nature of summer storms, the roads dry out within several hours and again become passable. The monument is located in a Cold Desert region, characterized by low humidity, hot summer days, with occasional violent afternoon thunder storms; summer evenings are cool because skies are clear and there are no moderating large bodies of water nearby. Most moisture falls as winter snow, and winter temperatures are often cold. Elevations vary between 4,500 feet and 9,000 feet. Thus, a hot summer day at the Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center can be pleasantly cool at Harpers Corner.

Map In a PDF format Arches National Park - PDF
Setting
Arches National Park is located on the Colorado Plateau of eastern Utah in the northeast corner of what is called Canyon Country. It runs about 15 miles north-to-south and about 10 miles east-to-west, encompassing 114 square miles ( 73,379 acres). The Colorado River creates the southern boundary of Arches National Park. On the opposite bank is the Moab Valley and the town of Moab. To the east, across the Colorado River, the La Sal Mountains rise to over 12,000 feet. The park is adjoined on the west by the Moab Canyon. Salt Valley runs through the park from northwest to southeast.
Climate
In summer, June through September, temperatures may exceed 100 degrees F; in winter, December through February, temperatures often drop below 32 degrees F. Temperatures may range 50 degrees in a 24-hour period. Dress accordingly. Very dry! Carry drinking water at all times.
Getting There
Transportation
Air
Major airlines fly into Salt Lake City, Utah (5 hours by car) or Grand Junction, Colorado (2 hours by car). A commuter airline, Alpine Air, flies into the Canyonlands Airport, 15 miles from the park, and into Salt Lake City.

The Southern Colorado Geodata Lab is a center for education
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies boasts nationally recognized and award-winning faculty members and a graduate program in Applied Geography. This, along with the advanced equipment the Geodata Lab provides, allows for relevant and exciting research on many topics, including natural physical systems, population and society, natural hazard mitigation and policy issues, and other applied uses of GIS.
Outreach projects within the University and larger community have included map creation for various non-profit organizations, GPS outings with local elementary students, habitat characterization/identification studies, and an interactive map of geologic hazards in Colorado Springs and El Paso County on the web for public information. Our base of excellent undergraduate and graduate student workers and researchers, allows the Geodata Lab to conduct top-notch GIS projects and geo-spatial research at a lower cost than private GIS companies and consulting firms.

    Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Author: Thomas D. Sisk Geographic Information Systems allow the overlaying of data layers as diverse as satellite imagery, plant surveys, and bird abundance data. Different data layers can be queried simultaneously, providing deeper insight than might be possible with traditional analytical approaches. Geographic Information systems (GIS) are the combination of spatially referenced data, appropriate computer hardware and software, and users competent to employ the data and technology to solve problems. GIS is typically used to store and analyze extensive information in a map-based format. This allows relatively easy retrieval and manipulation of information and provides new analytical capabilities based on spatial relationships between sites of interest and any combination of available data sets.
GIS as link a between geography and related sciences
Diverse data types, be they physical, biological, or cultural, can be incorporated into this landscape representation, using a topology that retains their inherent spatial relationships. These innovations have revolutionized the way we work with spatial data and they we think about maps themselves
