"Geography tells what is where, why and what of it." - Isaiah Bowman Students often ask "What can I do with geography?" While it is easy to get excited about maps, different cultures and environments, and even being a better citizen through geography, it is harder to see how geographic knowledge can lead to good jobs or meaningful careers. However, in recent years people have discovered that large numbers of societal problems have geographic dimensions and that education in geography provides essential skills for real-world problem solving. The range of jobs with a geographic aspect to them can be found in any newspaper, with articles about world hunger, environmental quality, hazardous-waste disposal, crime, urban housing, agricultural productivity, water management, transportation, and the value of land and real estate. As a result, geography has become a necessary ingredient in hundreds of different jobs. The following list contains a representative sample of job titles of former graduates with a Geography major. Use this as an idea list, and remember that it represents some, but certainly not all, of the careers you might consider. Students obtaining employment immediately upon graduation are usually those with the best college records and a willingness to relocate to find a job. Some of these jobs also require education beyond a bachelors' degree.

I n collecting cartographic materials relating to the events of 9/11, the Library's Geography and Map Division is concentrating on documenting the role maps played in managing the recovery effort. Traditional surveying and mapping techniques as well as modern electronic and remote sensing technologies were employed to aid the rescue and recovery operations, including remote sensing and aerial imagery, digital orthophotography, cutting-edge laser (light detection and rangingLIDAR) technology with the capability of producing accurate elevation data, and thermal imagery for mapping hot spots in the rubble. T hese mapping initiatives directed at the federal, state, and municipal levelssometimes in association with the private-sectorprovided important geographic and cartographic resources to help officials evaluate damage, monitor the progress of recovery, and provide for the safe deployment of personnel.

    • Colorado Riverbed Case The Colorado Riverbed Case, sometimes known simply as "the Riverbed Case," grew out of a desire by the State of Utah to determine, legally, who owned the bed of the Colorado River. Paper documents of the Colorado Riverbed Case appear to be very rare and are known to be archived in institutions such as the Utah State Historical Society and the Utah State Archives. An abridged version of the testimony was published at one time, by a non-government printing company. It would appear that this abridged narrative, in two volumes, is quite scarce and unavailable to the general public. Approximately 2,125 pages of the Colorado Riverbed Case are digitized here from Microfilm. Exploring the Colorado River Geology Of The Plateaus Of Utah In the summers of 1875, 76 and 77, under the direction of Major John Wesley Powell, Clarence Edward Dutton (1841-1912) of the US Geological Survey, explored, studied and mapped the geology of the high plateaus region of the territory of Utah. This book is the resulting report published by the US Department of the Interior. The report includes a prefatory note by Major Powell.
