Colorado School Shootings Tragic, Superintendent Says. West Virginia Proactive In Safe Schools Initiatives Posted: April 21st, 1999
CHARLESTON – State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Henry Marockie today said the West Virginia education community sends its heartfelt sympathy to the students, faculty and administrators of Columbine High School and the entire community of Littleton, Colo.
"The shootings and violence that occurred at Columbine High School are a tragic event and touch every school community by their very nature," Dr. Marockie said. "We are deeply saddened and want the people of Colorado to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers."
Marockie noted that even as investigators and school officials search for why the violence occurred, education officials throughout the nation must ask whether they have done everything possible to try to prevent a similar occurrence elsewhere.
"While there is no absolute deterrent, West Virginia has taken definitive, exemplary steps to try to ensure safety in our public schools. In addition to the Safe Schools initiatives launched in 1995 and expanded since then, we are providing ongoing training for principals, teachers and school personnel on crisis intervention and crisis management," Marockie said. "The West Virginia Department of Education has employees who work full-time on the many aspects involved in Safe Schools issues and staff development."
The West Virginia Safe Schools program has two major components: the Responsible Students project and the Safe and Drug-Free Schools initiative. Through these programs education staff provide student assistance, teach conflict resolution, and oversee peer mediation.

Following an Economic Summit in 2001 voicing community concern and facing employer lay-offs, City Council prioritized economic development as the number one issue to address. City Council initiated the first step toward an economic development program by forming an economic development division and hiring of an Economic Development Manager. The second step in this process is to develop an outline that details the actions needed to formalize an effective economic development program. The purpose of the City of Loveland Economic Development Plan is to provide a structure to develop a comprehensive economic development program that serves the needs of the community and its residents. This plan will include basic education regarding the importance of economic development, a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, an economic base analysis, as well as projections.

Colorado Kansas Missouri Nebraska North Dakota South Dakota ... Wyoming Kansas State Profile Narrative Narrative Goals and Outcomes School leaders in Kansas work in a performance measured, results-driven environment and face many complex demands for which they have not been trained, demands that challenge the capacities of even the most experienced among them. In Kansas, the present accountability system has been in place since 1989, and it's primary aim is to ensure that Kansas educators and communities focus on student success. Not only are test scores rising, but students are also afforded more opportunities than ever before to take advanced courses and continue their education beyond high school. Kansas Curriculum Standards and the State Technology Plan outline the expectations for technology use in schools. Superintendent leadership must drive district coordinating strategies for building technology plans based on applicable state standards. Principals must use their expertise to implement the plan at the facility level. The Kansas State Board of Education recognized the need for education leaders to use technology, enhance school operations, enrich the curriculum, and improve learning. To meet the demands for leadership development and technology learning opportunities, the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Andy Tompkins, formed a leadership collaborative to develop the resources and funding to fully support visionary leadership development in Kansas.
