Division of Instruction K-8 LITERACY Rationale Back to Curriculum Index Top of Page Philosophy As educators in the Aurora Public Schools, we believe that..... the learner is the center of the educational experience. all children have a rich and varied potential for learning and must be provided with appropriate educational opportunities to meet their diverse learning needs. ongoing assessment must drive instruction so that instructional methods and sequences are based on the strengths, needs and experiences of the learners. students build knowledge and develop competency over time. This progression in students' competencies is reflected in the APS Communication and Arts and Humanities standards and benchmarks, as well as the APS developmental continuums for reading and writing. To implement these beliefs, we will develop a balanced curriculum which will include: explicit instruction provided within meaningful contexts in:
* the three cueing systems: phonics, syntax and semantics so that students can integrate these skills to create meaning.
* reading comprehension strategies so that students can develop a repertoire of skills and strategies for creating, analyzing and interpreting text.

Some Schools Opt to Go Wireless
Although people often use the terms cellular and wireless interchangeably when they talk about phones, the two are different. A wireless phone system that has no monthly charges and works only on school grounds is becoming popular with certain school systems. Education World chats with school leaders in districts that have adopted wireless phone technology. Included: How do wireless systems work? Administrators contemplating back-up communications systems for their schools now have an option other than cellular phones and walkie-talkies. Several companies are marketing wireless phone systems to school districts. Wireless systems enable every staff member to carry a phone, and no monthly air-time charges are incurred.

Futuring for Extension
We did it–it's done! The final Futuring Report "Framework for the Future: A Strategic Plan for Cooperation Extension" has been approved by Director's Administrative Council (DAC) and posted to our Cooperative Extension website, along with a time line summary. Both documents are available now at: www.ext.colostate.edu/staffres/futuring/futuremenu.html . This was announced in Monday Memo last week, but I want to refer to it again. I especially applaud the leadership of Jacque Miller and Judy Barth, as they served as co-chairs of the steering committee, but also want to acknowledge the significant contribution by the task force chairs and the members of Cooperative Extension and our partner organizations who contributed so much to this plan. Now the work begins. In Monday Memo of April 5, I announced the appointment of a User Fee Task Force. That is the first action being taken under the framework of the Futures Report. As DAC reviewed and recommended acceptance of the Futures Report, considerable attention was given to the Vision Statement, Futures Statements and Value Statements. An action item within the report indicates that the Vision and Value Statements are to be accepted and shared with CSUCE and CSU no later than July 1, 2004. Thus, I want to repeat the Vision Statement here as follows: Cooperative Extension is the front door to Colorado State University providing the extensive knowledge, research capabilities and resources of this premier land-grant university to Coloradans from all walks of life. Cooperative Extension is dedicated to serving current and future needs of Coloradans by providing educational information and programs that safeguard health, increase livelihood, and enhance well being.

December 2003
  • From the Director Announcements
    From the Director
As we come to the end of this year, we can reflect on a year with considerable challenges, change and even frustration. Given the realities of 2003 that are driving significant changes for Cooperative Extension, we are engaged in or about to realize the benefit of the following:
  • The Cooperative Extension futuring effort is coming to a close with the five task forces rendering reports to the steering committee, who will review them and merge them to one Futuring for Cooperative Extension Report by December 15.
  • The Academic Affairs planning effort is coming to completion. You will recall it includes an element focusing on outreach chaired by Marc Johnson. Their report will be a major element of the Academic Affairs plan being finalized.
  • We have finalized and submitted in the budgeting process a funding initiative totaling $2 million for the three agencies—Cooperative Extension, Agricultural Experiment Station and Colorado State Forest Service. We have discussed this initiative with significant support groups and it has been presented in the budgeting process through the Board of Governors of Colorado State University, Colorado Commission on Higher Education and included in the presentation to the Joint Budget Committee by President Penley.
As 2003 draws to a close, two significant members of our administrative team will be taking new assignments. We wish Mary McPhail Gray the very best in her new work as Deputy Administrator at CSREES and express thanks and appreciation to her for her contribution to the progress of Cooperative Extension for more than six years. We also wish Doug Steele the very best as he takes over the responsibility for Cooperative Extension in the state of Montana. Doug has guided our state 4-H program for more than seven years. We wish him the very best and say thanks to him for his significant contributions to Colorado's Cooperative Extension and Colorado youth.
