Make a Difference in Your Child's Education
Ever wonder how you as one parent in a world of ever changing issues can have a direct and immediate impact on your child's education?

Simple…get involved in the Parent Teacher Advisory Council ("PTAC"). As PTAC members, we are also members of the Windsor community, parents of school-aged children, business owners, full time employees, and housewives. We are extremely busy parents who believe that being actively involved in our children's education is a priority, not a luxury. The PTAC parents constantly hear local parents complain about issues related to the Windsor schools. Windsor is a great town to live in because the school officials care about your input. So instead of complaining to other parents which ultimately yields no results, why don't you make a commitment to take an active role in bettering your child's education TODAY by getting involved in the Parent Teacher Advisory Council ("PTAC") on a regular basis. In getting involved through the PTAC, you can have a direct impact on decisions related to these very issues.
About PTAC
All Tozer parents are automatically members of the PTAC and are always welcome to attend meetings. This group meets approximately five times a year. The purpose of the PTAC is:

Alliance National Conference Agenda and Handouts The Technical Assistance Alliance for Parent Centers is an innovative project that supports a unified technical assistance system for the purpose of developing, assisting and coordinating Parent Training and Information Projects and Community Parent Resource Centers under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This project is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs and consists of 1 national center and 6 regional centers . The project is funded to strengthen the connections to the larger technical assistance network and fortify partnerships between parent centers and state education systems at regional and national levels. Parent Training and Information Centers (PTIs) and Community Parent Resource Centers (CPRCs) in each state provide training and information to parents of infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities and to professionals who work with children. This assistance helps parents to participate more effectively with professionals in meeting the educational needs of children and youth with disabilities. The Parent Centers work to improve educational outcomes for children and youth with all disabilities (emotional, learning, mental, and physical). The Alliance offers a variety of resources to further strengthen the Parent Centers' abilities to effectively serve the families in their communities whose children have disabilities. There are 106 parent centers in the United States. Staff members in these centers, as well as at the Alliance office, are likely to be parents of children with disabilities or have disabilities themselves. The

http://www.fund4colorado.org/cer/parentsFAQ.html
1. How does the CSAP help schools and students? The CSAP is a tool for teachers and parents to use to address the educational needs of the student. CSAPs are sent home to parents with a detailed diagnostic report that explains their child's academic strengths and areas that need improvement. This allows parents to work with teachers to better understand the unique needs of the child. 2. Will the CSAP affect my child's grade, ability to graduate or move to the next grade? No. Your child will take the CSAP test each year in grades 3 through 10 in reading and writing and grades 5 through 10 in math. In grade 11 your child will take the ACT which may be used to apply for college and will be recorded on his or her transcript. No child is denied advancement to the next grade or graduation from high school based on his or her results. CSAP scores are not used on a school's accountability report These assessments, which were written by Colorado teachers, provide you and your child's teacher a diagnostic tool of what your child knows and is able to do based on the academic standards for his or her grade level. It will provide the teacher with your child's strengths and weaknesses. The assessment will enable the teacher to provide targeted instruction and help for your child.
3. Are schools spending too much time preparing for the CSAP - are they "teaching to the test"?

1. Know what your child's CSAP scores mean. You should receive a diagnostic report with your child's CSAP scores which can tell you, for instance, not only if your child is struggling with reading, but which specific reading skills, such as vocabulary or reading comprehension.
The report explains the results in order for you to better identify the needs of your child. In general, scores or performance levels mean:
  • Advanced uses multiple strategies to construct and demonstrate higher levels of comprehension. Proficient student uses appropriate strategies to demonstrate comprehension of a variety of selections Partially Proficient student demonstrates use of limited strategies to comprehend Unsatisfactory may demonstrate evidence of only minimal or very general comprehension of a text that has substantial textual clues.
For an expanded explanation of the levels by grade and subject area, visit the Department of Education's web site . And for more information on preparing your child for the CSAP, download the Guide for Parents

The Act is the most sweeping reform of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) since ESEA was enacted in 1965. It redefines the federal role in K-12 education and will help close the achievement gap between disadvantaged and minority students and their peers.
