Disaster Preparedness for People With Disabilities (PDF) Establish a Personal Support Network
A personal support network is made up of individuals who will check with you in an emergency to ensure you are O.K. and to give assistance if needed. This network can consist of friends, roommates, family members, relatives, personal attendants, co-workers and neighbors. Some people rely on personal assistance services (attendants). This type of assistance may not be available after a major quake. Therefore it is vital that your personal support network consist of different people than those who are your personal attendants. If you employ a personal attendant or use the services of a home health agency or other type of in-home service, discuss with these people a plan for what you will do in case of an emergency. How will you get along in an emergency for as long as 7 days? A critical element to consider in your emergency planning is the establishment of a personal support network. Even if you do not use a personal attendant, it is important to consider having a personal support network to assist you in coping with an emergency. Do not depend on any one person.

One of the major issues addressed by the legislation is the quality of teachers for children with special needs. IDEA ’97 requires students receiving special education services to be educated with their non-disabled peers to the “maximum extent practicable.” As a result, according to a 2001 report from the Study of Personnel Needs in Special Education, 75% of students receiving special education services spend 40% or more of their day in general education classrooms. Consequently, 96% of general education teachers currently teach, or have in the past taught, children with special needs.
    Teacher Preparation and Certification
Special Education Training for General Education Teachers
How have states responded to the challenge to prepare general education teachers to meet the needs of students with special needs? According to ECS’ Teacher Preparation Policy Database (http://www.tqsource.org/prep/policy/), 46 states and the District of Columbia currently have statutes or regulations requiring teacher education programs to provide some instruction on teaching children with special needs to individuals seeking initial training in elementary or secondary education. The amount and content of this instruction, however, varies dramatically.

    Your Questions Answered:
Dear CAN: Our 15 year old (9th grade) son has recently been tested and we have learned of a rather substantial disparity between his verbal ability and his nonverbal/visual motor abilities as measured on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. He was first tested in June of 1994 where we first learned of his differences. Subsequently, he moved from a public school to a private college preparatory day school and has flourished there socially and held his own academically for the 7th and 8th grades, earning Bs and Cs in a comfortable and nurturing environment with small classes and the attention that goes with that. During this school year, however, he has had tremendous difficulty keeping up with his peers and this has resulted in terrible frustration and a belief on his part that his situation is futile. The secondary result of that conclusion is that he has basically quit doing homework, thereby exacerbating the problem. His grades are suffering and we fear he has lapsed into a cycle of failure and the plummeting in self esteem/self-worth that inevitably follows. Thanks for your response- IR in PA Dear IR: You do have rights in Pennsylvania under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. However, these rights are not helpful if your son is in a private school. 504 provides for appropriate modifications within the regular classroom, but only if the school receives federal money.

Talking with Young Children About the Colorado School Shooting
    Dr. Susan Linn
THE SCENE "Daddy, what's the matter with them?" asks four-year-old Sonia, pointing to a newspaper picture of two Columbine high school students crying. WHAT TO SAY
It's possible, and even preferable, to protect very young children and pre-readers from the details of the terrible tragedy in Littleton, Colorado. They may ask about pictures in the newspaper or things they've overheard, but there is no reason for them to be exposed to the grisly and terrifying television or radio coverage of the event. If your young children are inadvertently exposed to the situation, keep your explanations as general and reassuring as possible. Give details only as children ask for them. Here are some examples of what you might say to small children. What do you think is happening?
Getting a sense of what your child knows or imagines about the photograph is a good starting place for talking about it. Those people are sad.
Try giving a general response, associating a feeling to whatever your child has seen. Answer questions in more detail only if they ask. That boy is hurt.
