Human/Animal Bond:
Pets Living With Disabilities
As veterinary medicine advances, veterinarians are able to help an increasing number of animals with serious problems, and these animals are living longer than ever before. The number of animals with disabilities, chronic diseases, and other conditions that require special care is constantly rising, and these animals are beginning to find a special place in pet owners' hearts. "Animals are amazing in their ability to recover and adapt to life with a disability," says Dr. Robin Downing, a veterinarian in Windsor, Colorado. "Often it's much harder for us as people to get over our prejudices about special needs pets than it is for the animals to get over their disabilities." Less obvious needs
Many animals with mental retardation or cognitive function problems can do quite well with a little extra attention from owners, though results can vary widely depending on the pet's condition. Dr. Downing's cat Kramer was born with cerebellar hypoplasiapart of his brain did not fully develop. He can think and reason as well as any other cat, but he has problems coordinating the movement of his legs, and he often stumbles and falls. When he does, he simply picks himself up again. "He was born this way," explains Dr. Downing, "and he's never known any other kind of life. He doesn't know he's different from any other cat." Kramer mostly lives his life as a normal cat, but he does require some protection from staircases and other precarious places where his falls could be dangerous.

Posts: 72 What's an IEP? (and other special needs) My husband and I are being considered for the adoption of two siblings in Colorado (we're from Indiana, which I've heard has a tough person in charge of ICPC!).
Anyway, their profile is a little vague, so I was hoping someone could define the medical terms in "plain English" for us:
1. "The children's developmental challenges are met with an Individualized Education Plan." (What does this mean? Would they be behind academically, or is it physical/developmental?)
2. They "...have difficulty focusing on one activity at a time" and "take medication and receive therapeutic services." (For what? Adhd? Something else?)
3. They also "receive weekly physical, speech, and occupational therapies to help them with coordination, muscle tone, and speech impediments."

Hello, welcome to Parentline, where your questions get answered about children with special needs. Watch for this upcoming section in our web site: The Educator's Area Although much of our information is geared towards parents, many educators have found our information helpful as well. We decided to focus a little more on educators and what they need to meet the needs of children with special needs. So, watch for this area, soon to be developed! Dear CAN: Hi, I'm new at this, but hope someone can answer my question. My 8 year old son has Attention Deficit Disorder and his teacher and classmates want to encourage him. Are there any books out there besides "Shelley the Hyperactive Turtle?" The teacher wants to read them to the class. Thank you very much. Kate Dear Kate: Thank you for your question. Yes, there are other books for children, and here are a few to look into: Eukee the Jumpy, Jumpy Elephant

Colorado Charter Schools and Special Education Overview
As public schools, charter schools must open their enrollment to any student who lives within the authorizing school district, and must provide appropriate special education services as needed by students with disabilities. Charter school developers and operators are encouraged to focus their attentions on the difficulties charter schools encounter when serving students with disabilities and the technical assistance required for appropriate placement, IDEA compliance, liabilities and responsibilities, curricular adaptations, instructional modifications, and implementation of quality standards within charter schools. Resources and personnel are often limited as districts struggle to fill vacancies with a limited pool of licensed educators. Charter applications and contractual negotiations should provide explicit language for identifying and serving special ed students. Numerous research and studies on charter schools both locally and nationally indicate the growing awareness of and need for technical assistance in developing quality special education programs for students attending charter schools. Colorado charter school experiences are no different. Charter schools need to plan for the provision of ongoing and embedded staff development and training, resource development, IEP staffing, service providers, and funding around the issues of special education.

    Gifted Development Center
Denver, Colorado Every gift contains a danger. Whatever gift we have we are compelled to express. And if the expression of that gift is blocked, distorted, or merely allowed to languish, then the gift turns against us, and we suffer. (Johnson, 1993, p. 15) In order to understand the true meaning of giftedness, it is necessary that we separate the concept from achievement. High achievers are those who are motivated to do well in school. Gifted students may be high achievers or they may be high school dropouts. They have learning needs that differ from other students, just as developmentally delayed students have different learning needs. When giftedness is seen as the mirror image of retardation, it becomes clear that we have a responsibility to meet their needs, whether or not they are high achievers. So how can teachers meet the needs of gifted students? 1) First of all, ask the students! Engage the students in academic planning. It is amazing what a heart-to-heart talk with a gifted student will reveal. 2) Assess what they have already learned before teaching them. There is no use in relearning what one already knows. This can be done by looking at achievement test scores, giving them pre-tests of the material to be covered, informal talks about the subject matter or teacher-constructed diagnostic tests.
