About Us
The Colorado Certified Potato Growers Association is an association of certified seed potato growers that is over fifty year old. In the early 1920's potato growers saw the need to begin a highly focused effort of improving the quality of seed potatoes available to growers in Colorado and neighboring states. In 1940 the State of Colorado Department of Agriculture through Colorado State University commissioned the Potato Certification Service. This service in conjunction with the Colorado Certified Potato Grower's Association, have gone to great lengths to provide the very best seed potatoes possible. Today our membership is made up of over 30 seed potato growers that enter seed potatoes for certification by the state of Colorado. The growth of our organization has been largely driven by the development of new, improved potato cultivars, use of new seed production technology, a better understanding of potato diseases and their management, and improved marketing strategies for seed sales. The success of our organization has allowed us to build a disease testing facility and support major improvements in the certified seed program. For a complete listing of our certified growers go to the List of Certified Growers page.

CSU Home Thirteen Land-Grant Universities Collaborate On Production Ag CD-ROM Colorado agriculture continues to face tough challenges with an abundant supply of crops, low global demand, growing concern for labor costs, large supplies pressuring wheat prices, and farm debt up more than 25 percent from 1998. To help farmers, ranchers and small acreage owners, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension collaborated with 12 other land-grant universities to publish Put Knowledge to Work: Production Agriculture CD-ROM. This CD-ROM, containing over 2,700 publications, is the largest collection of university research-based production agriculture information. "The information on this CD will help equip crop and livestock producers with the information they need to increase efficiency and productivity and to comply with state and local environmental regulations," said Reagan Waskom, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension water quality specialist. Although the World Wide Web offers production agriculture information, not all sources are equally valuable or reliable. This CD provides reliable and immediate information when rural areas face Internet access problems. "Two of the three Internet service providers in our area are frequently unavailable. With this CD, the information is available literally in seconds," said Ron Ackerman, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension unit leader for Crowley County. "The enterprise budgets are extremely valuable to producers in preparing cash flow projections for their bankers. They also provide benchmarks for producers to compare with their own production costs. The record low prices that Crowley County farmers have received over the last several years mandates that they closely monitor and control production costs. This is the one area that they have some direct control over."

It may be too early to wage war on grubs
We have been receiving lots of calls on lawn activity, establishment, management, etc. The recent moisture has given hope to those of us who have been very, very cautious about how our lawns will fare throughout the summer. While this is definitely not the end of the drought period, it certainly is a welcome relief. New questions regarding spots on lawns tend to center around grub damage. In fact, some of it may be due to grubs and a lot of it is due to clover mites and drought conditions that have prevailed over the last couple of years. There are some new insecticides on the market for grub control that seem to do a good job, but this is not the most appropriate time of year to apply them.

  • To determine the ability of forage Brassicas and oats (Avena sativa L.) to provide late-season forage and hairy vetch and winter rye (Secale cereale L.) to provide early-season forage, when overseeded into sweet corn stalks.
  • To determine the profitability of overseeding forage Brassicas, oats, hairy vetch and winter rye into sweet corn stalks in terms of heifer average daily gain.
  • To determine the ability of forage Brassicas and spring oats overseeded into established pastures to provide increased late-season forage.
  • To disseminate the results of the project to farmers and ranchers. Abstract
    Site Information

General characteristics of all sites include soil types that are variable but generally clay loams to sandy loams, with a high-desert climate and elevations of 5,700 to7,000 feet and 9 to 14 inches of precipitation per year as rain and snow. Total holdings of farmer/rancher cooperators range from 2 to 25 acres. The area is mountainous, but field sites are graded with fairly uniform, gradual slopes. Most farmers and ranchers have off-farm employment.

Draft Environmental Assessment for the Management Plan for Endangered Fishes in the Yampa River Basin
LAKEWOOD, Colo.– The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service invites public comment on a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Management Plan for Endangered Fishes in the Yampa River Basin as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process. A Notice of Availability of the draft EA was published today in the Federal Register . The Service’s proposed action is to enter into a cooperative agreement with the States of Colorado and Wyoming to implement provisions of the Management Plan for Endangered Fishes in the Yampa River Basin The management plan addresses the impacts of present and future agricultural, municipal and industrial water depletions in the Yampa River Basin, while maintaining instream flows and other habitat components necessary to recover the endangered humpback chub, bonytail, Colorado pikeminnow and razorback sucker. The plan also outlines options to manage nonnative fish populations in the Yampa River as needed for recovery of the endangered fishes.
