Colorado AAUW March 2000 SB-186 Governor Owens' far reaching education reform bill has succeeded in the Colorado General Assembly. Colorado AAUW opposed SB-186. Punishing low performance schools is not constructive. Many of their problems are not ones they can control. That is high pupil turnover, poverty, lack of parent involvement, and English not the primary language spoken in the home. The schools need help and additional resources to improve the quality of education of the children who need it the most. See the Senate and House votes on SB-186 as amended by the Conference Committee in our April 4, 2000 Legislative Update The compromise bill created by the House/Senate Conference committee and approved by both chambers included the "opt-in" requirement for sex-ed.
