The beginning of this cycle roughly coincides with the English colonization of the Atlantic Coast of North America. Prior to this time there were already Spanish settlements in Florida; the French had colonized in South Carolina and Champlain was contemplating his colony on the St. Lawrence river; De Soto had discovered the Mississippi River and Sir Francis Drake as well as the Spanish had explored the Pacific Coast; and, of course, the Spanish had a large presence in the Caribbean and Southern North America. The products of the new world were already being sampled in Europe as tobacco was introduced by slave traders in England as early as 1565; sugar cane and its by-product, Demon Rum, were being produced in the Caribbean; and fish and furs were being harvested from the Northern continent. By the end of the cycle, a dozen hardy colonies were functioning as a valuable component of the British colonial empire. Zaire
    Zaire
    From Colonial Times to Independence
After the 1884-85 Conference of Berlin gave undisputed sovereignty of the region of modern Zaire to Léopold II, king of Belgium, the first order of business was to structure the area's economy to suit Belgian needs. The goal was to make an economically viable and self-sustaining entity out of the Congo Free State, as Zaire was then known (see The Colonial State , ch. 1). In 1908 the Belgian parliament voted to remove the region from direct control of the king, make it a colony, and rename it the Belgian Congo. The Belgian government wanted to avoid subsidizing the administration of the new colony while at the same time reaping whatever profits might eventually be generated by the country. Therefore, the colony itself was to be responsible for financing its administration and security. Although exploitation of the country's mineral and agricultural wealth was substantial during the colonial period, economic development bore little direct relationship to the needs of the indigenous population. The production of cash crops for export was stressed at the expense of the production of food crops. Moreover, monetary benefits accrued almost entirely to non-Congolese, the foreign shareholders of the industrial and agricultural companies that constituted the modern sector, and the colonial state, which had holdings in many of the companies. By offering exceedingly generous terms, the Belgian government induced major foreign financial groups to invest in its colony. The colonial state itself laid claim to a significant share in the ownership of corporations in the extractive and transportation sectors. In 1906 the General Holding Company of Belgium (Société Générale de BelgiqueSGB), a powerful Belgian trust, formed the Upper Katanga Mining Union (Union Minière du Haut-KatangaUMHK), the International Forest and Mining Company (Société Internationale Forestière et MinièreForminière), and the Bas-Congo to Katanga Railroad Company (Compagnie du Chemin de Fer du Bas-Congo au KatangaBCK). A majority shareholder in the UMHK and Forminère, the colonial state could potentially have run both companies. State capitalism did not extend to active involvement in company affairs, however; the colonial administration merely collected its dividends.

The essential questions to be pondered as a result of completing this study are:
    • How much does figurative language impede communication between peoples? If cultural differences were better understood, would people be more accepting of each other? Does a government change its policies depending on its place as a world
    power?
The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the World Wide Web change continuously. It is advisable that teachers review all links before introducing CyberGuides to students.

    email: John_Scarry@unc.edu Research Background:
During my career, I have worked for the Florida SHPO office, the Florida State Archaeologist's office, and the University of Kentucky Program for Cultural Resource Assessment, and I continue to have an active interest in public archaeology and cultural resource management in the United States. Current Research: (1) I am working with Margaret Scarry on an investigation of the ways that individual households articulated with larger social formations in the Black Warrior Valley of Alabama spanning the period of the construction of the Moundville chiefdom. We have conducted three seasons of field investigations at small sites of the West Jefferson and Moundville phases. As part of this project, Gregory Wilson has examined the archaeology of households in the nucleated community at the Moundville center and Mintcy Maxham has examined the nature and structure of rural settlement during the Moundville phase. (2) I am also working on a comparative study of mortuary practices and the construction of elite identities and chiefly authority in the Etowah, Lake Jackson, and Moundville chiefdoms of the southeastern US. The study focuses on the ways that the people of these societies employed sets of symbols and understandings of the world shared across the region in distinct, historically contingent practices and discourses to construct similar structures of authority and elite identity.

Life in English colonial towns in the 1700s was a mixture of the old world and the new. Step back in the past and visit them today.
To tour Colonial Williamsburg, go to http://www.history.org/
. From the Home Page, click on "Almanack." Scroll down and click on "See the Places." Colonial Williamsburg has been restored to appear as it did in the year 1773. Visit some houses, including Benjamin Powell's house. What did he do for a living? Why might you find his job title strange?
Stroll down Duke of Gloucester Street. Visit at least five buildings along it. Click on the links to see what the building looks like. Describe what these visits tell you about eighteenth-century southern life.
Now head north to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Go to http://www.ushistory.org/tour/ . Scroll down the Index listings to visit Arch Street Friends Meeting House. How is this building different from the Williamsburg buildings?
Philadelphia also has a historic mile with many places to visit (much like the Duke of Gloucester). Choose three places to visit from the Index. Write down interesting facts about each of the places that you choose.

Edward Said: Father of Post-Colonial Studies
    By RICHARD BERNSTEIN
The New York Times , Sep. 25, 2003
Edward Said, a polymath scholar and literary critic at Columbia University who was the most prominent advocate in the United States of the cause of Palestinian independence, died in New York City today. He was 67. The cause of death was leukemia, which Mr. Said had been battling for several years.
Mr. Said, who was born in Jerusalem during the British mandate in Palestine and emigrated to the United States when he was a teenager, spent a long and productive career as a professor of comparative literature at Columbia and was the author of several widely discussed books. He was an exemplar of American multiculturalism, at home both in Arabic and English, but, as he once put it, 'a man who lived two quite separate lives,' one as an American university professor, the other as a fierce critic of American and Israeli policies and an equally fierce proponent of the Palestinian cause.
Though a defender of Islamic civilization, Mr. Said was an Episcopalian married to a Quaker. He was also an excellent pianist who for several years was the music critic for
